Anne V. Capper / Gill

This picture is taken from the family group picture. Ann is here about 38 years old.

She had married William Harry Gill, (who was called Harry Gill by the family, i.e. by my father), on 28th Oct. 1878 at St. Margarets, Rochester. She was his second wife. According to my aunt Eileen Pratt, (in a conversation in 1970), Harry and Anne both were very godly and strongly influenced my grandfather William J. Capper. My aunt also related that on the death of Annes mother Ann on 1.1.1882 she brought up her younger brothers and sisters. (She thought that that had been before the marriage to Harry Gill.)

However, the Gills first child Anne Chubb Gill was born in 2Q 1883 in  Newport, Mon (now Gwent), the second William  was born there in 1885 and the picture below dated about 1887 was taken in Newport.

This means that probably both families, John with the younger children and Harry and Anne Gill, moved to Newport at the latest in 1883, otherwise Ann could not have looked after the other children. The reason why Newport was the destination has very probably to do with the jobs of the two men.
In the census taken in 1901, Harry Gill has the occupation Examining Office Customs. By then the Gill family is living in West Ham, Essex, but prior to that he may well have been with the customs in Newport, which is where John Capper worked up to his retirement in about 1893.
