Nach der Fahrt die albanische Küste entlang kommen wir am Ende der Ksamil Halbinsel zur antiken Stadt Butrint, die selbst auf einer weiteren, kleineren Halbinsel steht
Auf dem folgenden Plan sieht man die alte Stadt #1.
Sie liegt direkt an dem Vivar Kanal, der den Butrintsee mit dem Ionischen Meer verbindet und der direkt gegenüber der griechischen Insel Korfu mündet.
Butrint hat eine lange Geschichte von prähistorischen Zeiten an und gehört seit 1992 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.

After driving down the Albanian coast to the end of the Ksamil peninsula we arrive at the ancient city of Butrint, which is on another, smaller peninsula.
On the following plan the old town is # 1.
It lies directly on the Vivar Canal, which connects the Butrintsee with the Ionian Sea at a point directly opposite the Greek island of Corfu.
Butrint has a long history from prehistoric times onwards and was declared part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1992.

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt sehen wir diesen Besuch als Schlusspunkt unserer kurzen Zeit in Albanien, da nur noch wenige Kilometer bis zur griechischen Grenze zu fahren sind. (Für das, was dort passiert, siehe den Anfang des folgenden Kapitels.)

At this point in time we see this visit as the final item on our short visit to Albania, as there are only a few more kilometres to the Greek border.

Der Eingang zur Stadt liegt nah bei dem Vivar Kanal (l). Rechts hinter dem Zaun steht ein viereckiger Turm, den die Venezianer zur Überwachung des Wasserweges gebaut haben.
Der Plan (r) stellt eine Rekonstruktion der Stadt zu griechischen Zeiten dar und gehört zu den sehr guten Erklärungstafeln, die in Butrint aufgestellt sind.

The entrance to the city is close to the Vivar Canal (1). To the right, behind the fence stands a rectangular tower built by the Venetians to guard the waterway.
The plan (r) represents a reconstruction of the city in Hellenistic times, and is one of the very good explanatory panels erected in Butrint.

Im 4. Jh. v.Chr. war Butrint die führende Stadt in der Gegend von Epirus zwischen Illyrien im Norden und Griechenland im Süden. Die historische Gegend liegt heute teilweise in Albanien, teilweise in Griechenland.
Zu dieser griechisch geprägten Zeit wurde hier ein Asklepios-Heiligtum gegründet (Bild), was zum Ruhm und zum zunehmenden Wachstum der Stadt geführt hat.
Auf der rechten Seite ist das Theater zu erkennen, siehe nächstes Bild.

In the 4th cent. Butrint was the leading city of the Epirus area, which lay between Illyria in the north and Greece in the south. The historical area is today partly in Albania, partly in Greece.
At this time, when the culture was predominantly Greek, an Asclepius sanctuary was founded here (picture). This led to the citys increasing growth and fame.
On the right the theatre can be seen, (see also next picture).

Wie in Epidauros in Griechenland, das wir einige Wochen später besuchen, ist der Asklepios-Komplex mit einem schönen, recht gut erhaltenen Theater ausgestattet, und es wird, wie die hölzerne Bühne rechts zeigt, sicherlich auch heutzutage für Aufführungen benutzt.

As in Epidaurus in Greece, which we visit a few weeks later, the Asclepius complex is equipped with a beautiful theatre. The wooden stage on the right indicates that this is used nowadays for performances.

In den zwei letzten Jh. vor Christus nahm der römische Einfluss zu. Butrint wurde als Veteranenkolonie baulich erweitert. Unter anderem wurde das Theater ausgebaut und das obligatorische römische Bad (oben) gebaut.
Als Teil dieser Erweiterungen wurde auch das römische Forum gebaut, das im nächsten Bild in etwa dort liegt, wo wir zum Fotografieren standen.

In the last two centuries BC Roman influence increased. Butrint was enlarged to be a veteran colony. Among other things, the theatre was expanded and the obligatory Roman bathhouse (above) was built.
As part of these extensions a Roman forum was built, which in the next picture is about where we stood to take the photo.

Die römische Stadt wurde bis jetzt nur gebietsweise ausgegraben. In dieser Insula, (d.h. Häuserblock), wurde auf einem früheren, römischen Gebäude mit Brunnen eine Kirche gebaut (l), von der wir eine Apsis sehen. Laut Schautafel wurde die Kirche um diesen Brunnen gebaut. Wie es ist, sieht es aus, als ob die Kirchenbesucher nasse Füße bekommen hätten.
Auf dem weißen Stein im Teich macht es sich eine Schildkröte bequem und lässt sich im Wasser spiegeln (r).

Only some parts of the Roman city have been excavated so far. In this insula (i.e. city block), a church (1), of which we see one apse, was built on a former Roman building with a fountain. According to the information board the church was built around this fountain. As it is, it looks as if the church visitors would have got wet feet.
On the white stone in the pond a turtle has made itself comfortable and admires its reflection in the water (r).

Das Baptisterium (oben) steht frei, d.h. is nicht an einer Kirche angebaut. Mit einem großen, runden Mosaik aus dem frühen 6. Jh. stellt es eins der hervorragendsten, frühbyzantinischen Monumente des gesamten zentralen Mittelmeerraumes dar.
Leider hebt und senkt sich saisonal der Wasserpegel der nahen Lagune, weshalb das große Mosaik vor wiederholten Überflutungen geschützt werden muss. Es wird daher verständlicherweise nur mit langen Abständen für Besichtigung und Konservierung freigelegt.

The baptistery (above) stands as a separate building rather than being attached to a church. With its large, round mosaic from the early 6th century it is one of the most outstanding, early-Byzantine monuments of the entire Central Mediterranean.
Unfortunately, the water level of the nearby lagoon rises and falls with the seasons, which is why the large mosaic must be protected against repeated flooding. So it is understandable that it is only uncovered at long intervals for viewing and for conservation.

Die Stadtmauer zur Lagune hin wurde erstmals im 6.Jh. gebaut, aber die Sektion, die man jetzt hier (oben) sieht, wurde zu verschiedenen Zeit vom 11. - 16. Jh. erstellt und zuletzt zwischen 2007 und 2011 konserviert.

The city wall on the shore of the lagoon was first built in the 6th century. However, the section seen here (above) was built at various times from the 11th to the 16th century and was last conserved between 2007 and 2011.

Butrint hatte schon im 5.Jh. einen Bischof. Die große Basilika wurde gleichzeitig mit dem Baptisterium im 6.Jh. gebaut und war danach bis ins 16. Jh. Bischofssitz. Im Mittelalter wurde die Basilka weitgehend erneuert.

Butrint already had a bishop in the 5th century. The Great Basilica was built in the 6th century at the same time as the Baptistery and was then the bishops seat until the 16th century. In the Middle Ages the Basilica was substantially renovated.

|
Auf der nord-östlichen Seite der Halbinsel steht für eine längere Strecke diese Schutzmauer (o.l.), die auf das 4. Jh. v. Chr. zurück geht. Erst bei näherer Betrachtung merkt man, wie gut sie gebaut ist, d.h. ohne Mörtel und mit fein angepassten, großen Steinblöcken.
Das schmale Tor, das eigentlich ein kurzer, mit großen Steinen überdachter Durchgang ist, unterstreicht die Stärke der Verteidigungsmauer.
Weniger Meter weiter steht ein sehr niedriges Tor (nächstes Bild), das der besseren Verteidigung wegen im 5. Jh. n. Chr. niedriger gemacht wurde. Dafür wurde ein altes Tempelrelief verwendet, (evtl. sogar aus dem 6. Jh. v. Chr.), das einen Löwen beim Vertilgen eines Stierkopfes darstellt.
Das Tor wird deshalb Löwentor genannt, das allerdings nicht mit dem bekannteren und älteren Löwentor in Mykene verwechselt werden soll, das wir zwei Wochen später besuchen.

On the north-eastern side of the peninsula stands a long protective wall (above left), which dates back to the 4th century BC. Only on closer inspection does one realize how well it is built - without mortar and with finely fitted, large stone blocks.
The narrow entrance - a short passage covered with large stones - emphasizes the size of the defensive wall.
A few metres further on there is a very low entrance (picture below), of which the height was reduced for better defence in the 5th century AD. For this purpose an ancient temple relief was used, (possibly even as old as the 6th century BC), which represents a lion devouring a bulls head.
The gate is therefore called 'The Lion Gate', not to be confused with the more famous and older Lion Gate in Mycenae, which we visit two weeks later.

Wir steigen zur venezianischen Kastellburg (oben) hoch, die einen guten Ausblick anbietet und wo ein Museum untergebracht ist, in dem Artefakte von verschiedenen Ausgrabungen in Butrint ausgestellt sind.
Bilder unten: Auf der Burgmauer werden, wie üblich auf öffentlichen Gebäuden, eine stolze albanische Flagge und, nicht weit weg, die Büste einer klassischen Schönheit (u.r.) gezeigt.
Sicherlich eine Miss Butrint - aber aus welcher Epoche?

We climb up to the Venetian castle (above), which offers a good view and where there is a museum showing artefacts from various excavations in Butrint.
Pictures below: On the castle wall, as on many public buildings, a proud Albanian flag is flying. Not far away is a bust of a classical beauty.

Wir verlassen die antike Stadt.
Direkt neben dem Eingang zum Gelände ist die Anlegestelle für die kleine, kettengeführte Fähre über den Vivar Kanal. Beim darauf Fahren müssen wir aufpassen, aber die Fährstrecke ist sehr kurz, kostet nicht viel und spart uns eine ca. 40 km lange Umfahrung des Butrintsees.

We leave the ancient city.
Right next to the entrance to the site is the pier for the small, chain-guided ferry across the Vivar canal. We have to take care driving on, but the ferry crossing is very short, does not cost much and saves us a drive of about 40 km around the Butrintsee.

Während wir auf unsere Überfahrt warten, bewundern wir die venezianische Dreiecksburg am anderen Ufer des Vivar Kanals im Abendlicht. Sie wurde angeblich gebaut, um Fischereiaktivitäten zu schützen.
Die Fahrt setzt sich in Richtung Süden fort zum 20 km entfernten Grenzübergang nach Griechenland, Qafë Botë.

While waiting for our crossing, we admire the Venetian Triangular Fortress on the other side of the Vivar canal in the evening light. It was apparently built to protect fishing activities.
The journey continues southwards to the border crossing to Greece at Qafë Botë about 20 km away.
