Amphitheater von

Amphitheatre of

Durrës

Kandidat für UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe

Candidate for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

We leave the town of Bar in Montenegro and soon cross the border into Albania. After a total of about 150 km towards the Southeast we reach the port town of Durrës, which has about 110 000 inhabitants.
Durrës is busy and not very tidy, but we do not want to spend much time here. We only want to visit the historic amphitheatre.

On the way  to the amphitheatre we admire the remains of the mighty city wall, which was originally built by the Eastern Roman emperor Anastasius I about 500.
The wall was built so wide that four horsemen could ride along the top of it side by side.

Das Amphitheater wurde Anfang des 2. Jh. n.

The amphitheatre was built by the Romans at the beginning of the 2nd  century AD and accommodated 15000-18000 spectators, which is a clear sign of the importance of the city at that time.
The city, at than time named Dyrrhachium, lay on the important Roman trade route between Rome and Constantinople:
Rome - Brindisi on the Appian Way,
Ship from Brindisi to Durrës,
Durrës - Constantinople on the Via Egnatia.

At the entrance to the amphitheatre, this information (l) and an aerial photo of the amphitheatre are on display. It was first discovered in 1966, which also possibly explains why residential buildings could have been built (presumably prior to that) directly on the site (see aerial photo).

The long axis of the oval amphitheatre measures about 126 m.
In the picture the left side of the whole complex has survived much better.

Parts of the stands have been restored (1), but any use for modern performances seems to lie in the distant future.
The peaceful, free-ranging chickens have a certain  entertainment value, but fortunately that is very different from earlier performances - such as gladiatorial and animal fights - that took place on this site.

(Siehe Wikipedia).

The condition of this passage (1) below the stands, although it has certainly been heavily restored, is remarkably good. Some of the rooms and corridors can be visited.

In one of the galleries of the amphitheatre a small Byzantine chapel was built.

This chapel, of course, came much later, but Durrës has a very long Christian tradition. By the year 58 Christians already lived in the city and some historians believe that prior to that the apostle Paul himself visited Dyrrhachium. (See Wikipedia).

Jh. datiert.

In a niche near the chapel there are some remarkable mosaics. They date from the same period as the chapel. To the right of the head of the figure on the far left you can decipher 'Stephanos'. St. Stephan, the first Christian martyr, is depicted.

For further details of the mosaics see a good description (link in German) by Daniel Ursprung. He dates the mosaics to the second half of the 6th century.
A very different period is given for chapel and mosaics in the UNESCO application, where they are dated to the 10th century.

As we leave the amphitheatre, we pass some more excavated ruins.
In the aerial picture (above), this area near the road is still covered by grass. Looking at where the large ellipse originally would have been, these are probably the foundations or an underground section below the stands.

Before leaving the city we gather a few more impressions.
As in many Mediterranean towns, the negative effect on urban appearance is often ignored when installing cables (top left).
The entertainment offered at the fun fair (top right) looks terrifying!

There are some things we still have to get used to in Albania:
Waste disposal is unfortunately often neglected (lower left) and - lower right - if this chain of petrol stations wants to expand internationally, the use of another brand name would be recommended.

On the coast ca. 25 km south of Durrës we find our first campsite in Albania. It is called Kamping Pa Emer, Karpen, Golem, Albania, (GPS N 41°10'56" E19°28'41"). We like it well, including the good food in the  restaurant.

We also enjoy a beautiful sunset at the end of our first day in Albania.
