Unterwegs

On the way

von Durrës nach Butrint

from Durrës
to Butrint

Eselkarren (li), Reifentransport (re) / Mulecart (l), Tyre transport (r)

It is about 270 km from Durrës to Butrint, and we take the route marked with #1 on the map above.
For us, some of the vehicles (for example donkey carts, tire transport) are unusual and interesting. From what we have seen so far many of the Albanian roads are satisfactory but some are still being worked on, (lower left).

The 42 km² Narta Lagoon lies to the north of Vlorë. About 1/3 of its area is used to win salt (lower right). The rest of the lagoon has a lot to offer for tourists, especially the small  island of Zvënec with its monastery, but we drive past unaware of that.

Vlorë, also known as Vlora, is a port and the third largest city in Albania, with an estimated population of 90,000.

The main road into the city is unattractive with a lot of rubbish directly next to the carriageway (1), but later on in the city itself one gets a much more  positive, modern impression (r).

After the town centre we turn onto the coast road and  immediately realize that we have arrived at the Albanian Riviera. The sunny beach has a magnificent view of the Bay of Vlora. In the middle is Sazan, Albania's only major island. At this narrowest point of the Adriatic the Italian coast - the heel of the Italian foot - is only about 90 km away.

There are charming coastal restaurants right on the shore (u.l.).

The importance of the Albanian flag and the first of the dates at the tunnel entrance only become clear after some research. Here in Vlora Albanias independence from the Ottoman Empire was proclaimed in 1912.
The second date is less exciting: the new-looking tunnel was presumably built in 2012.

When driving down the coast road, you have to take care of animals trotting around freely on the road. Both near the ltown of Vlorë, (above), and also in the later course of the SH8 (below), farm animals seem to show no inhibitions.

The SH8  leads over the Llogara Pass (1027 m) and then down between Maja e Çikës, 'The Maidens Peak', at 2045 m highest mountain of the Ceraunian mountains, and the Adriatic Sea. As the mountain chain lies directly on the coast, the difference in altitude from sea to mountains is dramatic.

Adria von SH8 bei Gjilekë / Adriatic Sea from the SH8 near Gjilekë

We are near the small village of Gjilekë and look out at to sea from the pass road. Here the Adriatic Sea to the north meets the Ionian Sea to the south. The islands which can be seen in the haze belong to Greeces Ionian islands.

A lonely street vendor to the right has occupied the best place to park. As we are almost the only tourists around we do not want to be pressured by him, so stop a little further down the road. The view is good from here as well!

In Albania on buildings under construction we often notice figures hanging up. On the left it is a teddy-bear, on the right maybe a convict. We think they must be talismans for good luck.
Do they really bring luck when building? We note that in the next picture no lucky charm is hanging up, but to say this proves that charms bring luck would be problematic from the point of view of logic!

On the way we pass interesting red earth formations at Palasë, which remind us of the sand pyramids in Melnik, Bulgaria.

The rubbish dump at Dhërmi is less pleasant. Here we see what look like primitive dwellings made out of plastic sheeting and pieces of boarding, and they look inhabited.

It is a very warm evening and we are glad to find signs that really lead to a campsite at Livadhi beach (above) at Himarë. It is called Kamping Krane and has GPS reference N40° 06 '28 "E 019° 43' 38".

I am happy to be able to cool down in the sea. (No picture!)

The campsite is loud because of construction work and also loud talk until late in the evening. Campsite facilities are simple and the water is unfortunately not drinking water.
We sleep somehow anyway and move on the next day.

We continue down the SH8 towards the Southeast. In a sheltered bay a former Albanian submarine base Porto Palermo can easily be seen from the coastal road . Now only two patrol boats are stationed here.

Driving past we admire the place a camper van driver has found to park on the promenade at Bunec Beach, Piqeras. We are now at the southern end of the Albanian Riviera.

A little  north of Sarandë there is a spectacular view to the southern Albanian mountain chain Mali i Gjerë. Behind its left-hand end is the town of  Gjirokastra. The highest peak, approximately in the middle of the mountain chain, is Mali i Frashëit, (1800 m).
Nearer to us on the Finic Plain is a curiously folded 272 m high hill, on which ruins of the ancient city Phoinice are located. The name of the village, Finik, at the foot of the hill derives from it.

The city of Sarandë, (or Saranda), as we drive in on the SH8 from the north, does not show up in good light. Some of the road into town is in very bad condition (l) and the demolished car on the road (r) doesnt look very welcoming.

What a pity! Judging from pictures in the internet Sarandë has its nice side towards the sea, with views of the Island of Corfu only 10 km away, but we dont see any of that when driving through.

We see many newly built hotels and apartments, which line the road (u.l.), but unfortunately as motor home users they dont interest us very much.

At a road under construction, just outside the city, we  have to brake sharply because of a wide road gap (u.r.). The positive side: at least they are working on road improvements here!

We are now on the approximately 7 km long peninsula south of Sarandë and have Lake Butrint on our left. The lake is a salt lagoon, connected at its southern end to the Ionian Sea by the Vivar canal.
This is the last leg of our route to Butrint. We hope to visit the ancient city today.
