We drive down the Adriatic to the coastal resort of Petrovac. In the sea just off the town are two small islands, Katič and Sveta Neđelja (l). On the second stands a small church of the same name (= Holy Sunday). Both islands are popular for divers.

At Petrovac we turn inland away from the Adriatic towards Lake Skadar, which is about 20 km away.

Lake Skadar is about 48 km long and 14 km wide and is the largest lake in the Balkans. It lies roughly Northwest to Southeast and parallel to the Adriatic coast. The coast is at lower left of the model in the visitors centre. The lake is separated from the Adriatic by the Rumija chain of mountains (shown coloured brown in the model).

The first impression of the otherwise beautiful lake is rather spoiled by the large amount of rubbish littering the shore.
On the far right the Rumija mountains can be seen.

Montenegro's highest island Vranjina (296m, l) is located in Lake Skadar. In the model shown above it is in the middle of the picture.

On the island, which is reached by a long bridge (r), stands the 18th C Lesendro fortress (link in Serbo-Croat).

The light coloured  building on the shore below the highest point of the hill (l) is the Lake Skadar National Park Visitor Centre, Vranjina (*).

We park near the centre and would have liked a fish meal as offered in the nearby buffet (below), but unfortunately the railway line running parallel to the road makes the restaurant inaccessible.

* As of 2017, there is a Lake Skadar National Park Visitor Centre in Virpazar. We suspect that this has replaced the centre in Vranjina we visited in 2012, but are not sure.

In the  Visitor Centre we visit the small museum: on the left, a stuffed  Dalmatian Pelican, of which we later see more lively specimens at Lake Prespa, Greece. On the right is an example of living culture in the region.

Bird watching trips are offered in the centre, but that does not help us as we would have to have booked 2 days in advance. Instead, we drive on towards Podgorica, capital of Montenegro, which is only 15 km away.
Actually we dont want to see the city, but more nature, and hope to find a route to drive around the upper part of the lake.

Unattractive black smoke just before Podgorica diminishes our enthusiasm for larger cities even more. On the way to the city centre (pictures below), we soon turn off left in the direction of Cetinje, the old capital.

16 km from Podgorica we turn down a smaller road in the direction of Rijeka and after 7 km we reach this beautiful view point, where the river Crnojević makes an almost 180° turn just before it joins Lake Skadar.
The river is named after an aristocratic family that ruled the area in the 15th century.

Below: The green silence is only briefly interrupted by a passing motorboat.

A small  type of pomegranate glows in the sun near the River Crnojević and down in the fertile river valley grazing sheep enjoy the fresh greenness.

We follow the river 3 or 4 km further upstream to Rijeka Crnojevića, a small town, which - you might have guessed - is also named after the same noble family. (Rijeka simply means river in Serbo-Croat.)
There is even a boat on offer suitable for people interested in diving (l).

Rijeka Crnojevića is known for its stone houses, some of which are apparently from the 17th and 18th Cs. Some, however, need urgent repair or even demolition.

The emblem of the town is the fine Old Bridge (Stari most) from 1853.

The area is idyllic for quiet water sports such as boat trips and canoeing.

The national park is known for birds and especially as a resting place for migrating birds.
In the short time here we do not see much, so a Pygmy Cormorant resting on its post in the evening has to represent the whole bird family.

From Rijeka Crnojevića we continue our tour and pass this further beautiful 180° loop in the River Crnojevića.

Especially after Lake Skadar comes back into view the mountainous route back offers further magnificent views in the evening sun. We can hardly stop  shooting pictures.

In the lower picture the double hill in the centre is the island Vranjina, now back in view again.

The circuit of the upper part of Lake Skadar is about 78 km altogether, of which the second half (seen in an anticlockwise direction) we find much more beautiful.

In the evening we continue our journey towards Bar, where we hope to find a campsite open.
