Von Plowdiw aus fahren wir ca. 110 km weit zu unserem nächsten UNESCO-Ziel, dem Thrakergrab bei Alexandrowo, das 2004 als Welterbestätte nominiert wurde.

We set out from Plovdiv to drive the ca. 110 km to our next UNESCO location, the Thracian grave near Alexandrovo, which in 2004 was nominated for inclusion in the World Cultural Heritage list.

Auf einem Hügel oberhalb des Parkplatzes steht das repräsentative Museumsgebäude (l).
Im Museum ist striktes Fotographieverbot, trotzdem ergattern wir die nicht sehr ergiebige, leere Empfangshalle (r).
Geradeaus ist der Eingang zur Ausstellung.

Wir erfahren von einer Tafel, dass die japanische Regierung den Bau des Museumszentrums für thrakische Künste der östlichen Rhodopen unterstützt hat (unten).

From the car park we walk up the short slope to the representative museum building (l).
Photography is strictly forbidden in the museum,  but despite that we snatch a not very interesting view of the empty reception hall (r).
The entrance to the exhibition room is straight ahead.

From a plaque on the wall we glean the information that Japan helped to build this Museum Center for Thracian Arts of Eastern Rodopi Mountains. 

Vom Museum selbst haben wir keine Fotos. Es ist ein einzelner, größerer Raum. Die Nachbildung des in der Nähe gefundenen Grabes steht etwas einsam in der Mitte und man kann sie betreten.

Die Qualität der Malereien innerhalb des nachgebauten Grabes hat uns leider nicht beeindruckt. Besser war sie in den Fotos der Originale, die an den Raumwänden gezeigt werden, wo man sich die Jagdszenen mit feinen Details, insbesondere den berühmten Nackten (der König?), der seine Doppelaxt handhabt, zu Gemüte führen kann.

Das Grab wird dem 4. Jh. v. Chr. und eventuell dem Thraker Stamm der Triballi zugeordnet. Die Kleider der Personen in den Fresken zeigen griechischen Einfluss.

Die Bilder in Wikipedia geben einen ausreichenden Eindruck von dem, was wir im Museum zu sehen bekommen haben.

We have no photos of the museum itself. It is a single fairly large room with the replica of the grave found nearby standing rather lonely in the middle. You can go into the replica grave.

Unfortunately we were not very impressed by the quality of the frescoes in the replica. The quality of the photos of the originals on the museum walls are better, where the fine details of the hunting scenes can be studied, especially the famous scene of the naked man (the king?) wielding his double axe.

The grave is attributed to the 4th C BC and maybe to the Thracian Triballi tribe. The clothes of the people in the frescoes show Greek influence.

The pictures in the Wikipedia article give a sufficient impression of the what we saw in the museum.

Auf der Suche nach weiteren Highlights laufen wir leicht bergauf ca. 170m in Richtung Süden zu dem Hügel, in dem sich das originale Tharkergrab wohl befindet.

Es stehen hier keine Hinweisschilder und verständlicherweise ist auch kein Eintritt zum Grab möglich.

Im roten Bauwagen scheuchen wir einen Wachmann auf (siehe unten), sonst gab es keine besonderen Vorkommnisse zu melden.

On our search for further highlights we walk about 170 m up the slope to the small hill which presumably houses the original Thracian grave.

There are no explanatory signs and understandably no entry to the grave is possible.

In the red construction trailer we flush out a watchman (see below), otherwise there was nothing particular to report.

Nach diesem kurzen Ausflug laufen wir zurück zu dem schönen Museumsgebäude mit seiner weiten Aussicht in die Ferne.

Am Ende des Besuchs haben wir leider das Gefühl, dass die vergleichsweise lange Fahrt von Plowdiw nur mager belohnt wurde, und ziehen los Richtung Norden nach Kasanlak, das ca. 100 km entfernt liegt. 

After this short excursion we walk back to the fine museum building with its impressive panorama view of the surrounding area.

At the end of the visit we have unfortunately the feeling that the relatively long drive from Plovdiv has delivered a rather meagre reward and set out to drive the further ca. 100 km  north to Kazanlak.
