Nicopolis ad Istrum

Der Tag ist sehr warm, über 35°C, und bei Resen, ca. 20 km nördlich von Weliko Tarnowo, genießt eine Herde Kühe Abkühlung im Fluß Rositza.

Flussabwärts unweit von Resen liegen die Ruinen der antiken, römischen und frühbyzantinischen Stadt Nicopolis ad Istrum, die 1984 als Kandidat für die UNESCO-Liste der Weltkulturerbestätten nominiert wurde.

The day is very warm, over 35° C, and a herd of cows enjoys cooling off in the river Rositza near Resen, about 20 km north of Veliko Tarnovo.

The ruins of the ancient, Roman and early-Byzantine city Nicopolis ad Istrum are situated further downstream not far away. In 1984 the antique town was nominated as candidate for the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage sites.

Ein gerade, römische Straße, mit großen Steinblöcken gepflastert,  läuft vom Nordtor auf das schon ausgegrabene Gebiet der antike Stadt zu (l).
Auf dem Plan, (r, am Besten vergrößert), ist es die Straße, die vom Punkt 1 nach unten führt.
Man sieht auf dem Plan, dass nur ein vergleichsweise geringer Anteil der ummauerten Stadt bisher freigelegt wurde.

Nicopolis ad Istrum (Stadt des Sieges an der Donau) wurde vom römischen Kaiser Trajan ca. 104 zur Ehre seines Erfolgs im ersten Dakerkrieg und als Teil der Befriedung und Sicherung des Gebiets südlich der Donau gegründet.

Das Gebiet der Daker liegt nördlich der Donau im heutigen Rumänien. Wir haben es vor wenigen Jahren mit Interesse besucht und darüber berichtet.

On the map, (r, click to enlarge), it is the road that leads down from point '1'.
The plan shows that only a comparatively small proportion of the walled city has so far been excavated.

Nicopolis ad Istrum ('City of the Victory on the Danube') was founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan about 104 in honour of his success in the first Dacian war and as part of pacification and security measures for the area south of the Danube.

The area of the Dacians lies north of the Danube in what is today Romania. We visited it a few years ago, found it interesting, and reported about it.

Nach der Gründung erfolgte etwa 130 Jahre lang die Blütezeit der Stadt. Nachher war sie weitere ca. 100 Jahre eine wichtige Stadt im römischen Reich. Im Jahr 447 wurde sie von den Hunnen zerstört, danach teilweise wieder aufgebaut und dann von den Avaren am Ende des 6. Jh. wieder zerstört.

The picture shows a general view of the area around the Forum, in the middle of the old city.

After its foundation the city flourished for about 130 years. Afterwards it was an important city in the Roman Empire for another 100 years. The in 447 it was destroyed by the Huns, afterwards only partially rebuilt and then destroyed by the Avars at the end of the 6th century.

Das linke Bild zeigt das Odeon, ein kleines Theater mit Platz für bis zu ca. 350 Besucher. Rechts schaut uns ein hübscher Stierkopf an. Er ist Teil eines Frieses, der irgendwo auf dem Boden lag.

Irgendwann waren auch Einfälle der Goten in Nicopolis ad Istrum zu verzeichnen. Es kann aber nicht immer nur kriegerisch gewesen sein, weil hier der gotische Missionar und Bischof Wulfila die ersten gotischen Schriftzeichen entwickelt hat, (vorher wurden Runen benutzt), und die Bibel, (später als Wulfilabibel bekannt), aus dem Griechischen ins Gotische übersetzt hat.

The picture on the left shows the Odeon, a small theatre with space for up to 350 visitors. On the right a nice bulls head looks at us. It is part of a frieze we saw lying on the floor.

At some stage the Goths apparently raided Nicopolis ad Istrum as well. However, there must also have been some peaceful contact, as it was here that the Gothic missionary and bishop Wulfila developed the first set of Gothic characters - prior to that Runes were used - and translated the Bible (later known as the Wulfila Bible) from Greek into Gothic.

Manche der Inschriften im Bereich der Nekropole, (des Friedhofs), sind auch interessant, (dank der auf Schildern gezeigten, englischen Übersetzungen).

Eine der Großtaten während Hadrians kaiserlicher Herrschaft war der Bau seines berühmten Hadrianswalls in Nordengland, nah an der schottischen Grenze, die wir vor wenigen Jahren besichtigt haben.

Some of the inscriptions in the area of the necropolis (the cemetery) are also interesting, thanks to the English translations shown on signs.

One of the great deeds during Hadrian's imperial reign was the construction of his famous Hadrian's Wall in northern England, close to the Scottish border. We visited it a few years ago (see our illustrated report).

Noch interessanter ist die Säule (l) von einem Mausoleum (siehe Abbildung rechts) mit diesem nachdenklich machenden Text:

Ihr schaut auf das Denkmal des Nikokleus, ein Mann von Ehre, der sich durch harte Arbeit mit seinen eigenen Händen ein Haus für Hades (d.h. für die Unterwelt) gebaut hat. Euch allen sagt er:
"Kurz wird der Pfad des Lichts sein, nach dem wir uns sehnen. Diese ewige Wohnung ist Heimkehr für die Sterblichen. Deshalb trink und leb ein sorgenfreies Leben. Du hast jetzt das Licht des Tages. Hör zu. Sobald Deine Seele Abschied nimmt, werden Dir diese Dinge entzogen.
Leb wohl, Fremder."

Even more interesting is the column (1) of a mausoleum (see drawing on the right) with this thought-provoking text:

You are looking at the monument of Nikokleus, a man of honour who built a home for Hades (i.e. for the underworld) by hard work with his own hands.
To all of you he says:
Short will be the path of the light we yearn for.  This eternal dwelling is homecoming for mortals. Therefore drink and live a carefree life: You have the daylight:
Listen: Once your soul departs, you will be deprived of all these things.

Diese schöne Westliche Smaragdeidechse genießt die Sonne und Wärme, die für uns in der Ruinenstadt langsam lästig werden.

Wir verabschieden uns deshalb von Nicopolis ad Istrum und fahren zurück in die Stadt Weliko Tarnowo.

This beautiful Western Green Lizard enjoys the same sun and warmth which is slowly become a nuisance for us as we look around the ruined town.

So we leave Nicopolis ad Istrum and drive back to the city of Veliko Tarnovo.

In die Stadt hinein fährt man auf der von Bäumen gesäumten Straße bul. Nezavisimost (oben).

Wir sind schon etwas müde, wollen aber mindestens etwas von der Stadt gesehen haben. Deshalb, obwohl wir das touristische Highlight der Stadt anfahren, die Festung Tsarevets, schauen wir sie und den gleichnamigen Hügel nur von Außen an.

Während des zweiten Bulgarischen Reiches war Weliko Tarnowo Landeshauptstadt und die mittelalterliche Festung die wichtigste Burg Bulgariens. Das endete mit der osmanischen Eroberung 1393 nach einer 3-monatigen Belagerung der Burg.
Hoch oben auf dem Hügel steht die Patriachalkathedrale der Heiligen Himmelfahrt.

We enter the city on the tree-lined road bul. Nezavisimost (above).

We are already rather tired, but want to have seen at least some of the city. Therefore, although we drive to the touristic highlight of the city, the fortress and hill Tsarevets, we only look at it from the outside.

During the second Bulgarian empire, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the country and the medieval fortress was Bulgaria's most important castle. This ended with the Ottoman conquest in 1393 following a three-month siege of the fortress.
High up on the hill stands the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Ascension.

Wir finden mit etwas Mühe einen sicheren Parkplatz für den Campingbus und spazieren in der Altstadt herum. Manche der Häuser zeigen deutlich den Einfluss osmanischer Architektur (oben links und rechts).

Von der Altstadt aus sehen wir den auffälligen Dom (u.l.) aus der Ferne. Er ist der Geburt der Gottesgebärerin gewidmet, (Ehrentitel für Maria, Mutter von Jesu Christi). Der Dom wurde 1844 fertiggestellt.

Bild unten rechts: Bei der anfänglichen Parkplatzsuche befanden wir uns auf der Uferstraße neben dem Fluss Yantra.
Ob der Angler dort Erfolg hat, wissen wir nicht, aber bei dem heißen Tag hat er sicherlich einen guten Stehplatz ausgesucht.

With a little trouble we find a secure parking place for our camper and walk around in the old town. Some of the houses clearly show the influence of Ottoman architecture (upper left and right).

From the old town we can see the conspicuous cathedral (u.l.) from afar. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, (an honorary title for Mary, mother of Jesus Christ). The cathedral was completed in 1844.

Picture lower right: While looking for a parking place on arrival we found ourselves on the road next to the river Yantra.
We do not know if the angler is successful here, but on a hot day he has certainly chosen a good place to stand.

Von manchen Stellen in Weliko Tarnowo hat man eine schöne Panoramaaussicht auf die Burg Tsarevets (links), den Fluss Yantra, der an der Stadt vorbeischlängelt, und Teile der Altstadt, hochgelegen über dem Fluss (rechts).

From some places in Veliko Tarnovo there is a fine  panoramic view including Tsarevets Castle (left), the Yantra River curling around the city, and parts of the Old Town high above the river (right).

Bevor wir Weliko Tarnowo verlassen, müssen wir unseren Campingplatz erwähnen, der im Dorf Dragizhevo liegt, ca. 14 km von der Stadt entfernt. Er heißt Camping Veliko Tarnovo und ist unter freundlicher, britischer Führung.

Es war bei weitem der beste Campingplatz, den wir zu dieser Jahreszeit offen in Bulgarien gefunden haben. Wir haben auch gerne dort im Restaurant gegessen und waren froh, auf der Rückfahrt nochmals dort übernachten zu können.

Before leaving Veliko Tarnovo, we have to mention our campsite. It is located in the village of Dragizhevo about 14 km from the town, is called Camping Veliko Tarnovo and is under friendly British management.  (GPS N43° 03'59" E 025° 45 '15")

It was by far the best campsite we found open at this time of year in Bulgaria. We also enjoyed eating there in the restaurant and were glad to be able to stay again on our return journey.
