Cévennes & Tarn

Mont Aigoual, Chaos und Schluchten

Mont Aigoual, Chaos and Gorges

After spending almost a week in the Camargue we decide to move on. We are interested in seeing the Cévennes, which are the southern foothills of the Massif Central. The area is not very large, but has very varied countryside and is on the Unesco candidate list to be recognized as Natural and Cultural World Heritage.
At first we drive along thickly wooded river valleys in which we occasionally - the Cévennes are only lightly populated - go through attractive old villages.

In the last few days the temperature has risen steadily and in the valleys it is almost too warm.
We have been told by friends about a beautiful place to spend the night near the top of the second highest mountain of the Cévennes, Mount Aigoual (1567m). We enjoy the long drive up to the mountain, but even more the fine panorama view from the summit and the fresh, cool breeze after the warmth lower down.
On the left of the picture is the last French mountain weather station that is still lived in by meteorologists. To the right the wooded slopes of the Cévennes, which merge into the blue of the sky in the evening light just as described in one of the travel guides.

At such a beautiful place we fancy something substantial to eat and decide on Spaghetti Bolognese. It is only when we get to the obligatory tin of tomatoes that we find out we have left the tin opener at home. Fortunately the small emergency saw, (for unforeseen eventualities such as this), does the job, although rather laboriously.

In spring the Cévennes are clothed in yellow, mostly flowering broom and dandelions. Besides the wooded mountain ridges the Cévennes also have dry and windy high plateaux called Causses, where only fairly thin vegetation grows on the meagre rocky ground.

But here on our way down from  Mount Aigoual it looks completely different. The slopes by the road are covered with yellow and red flowering flowers that look like hyacinths (l) - probably a type of orchid, but one which we havent seen in this yellow form elsewhere. Violets (m) and Anthericum (r) are to be seen as well.

A further attraction of the Cévennes are the gorges, deeply eroded river valleys with heavily weathered rocky cliffs.
Here we are standing on a viewing point in the Jonte Gorge. Vultures circle above us but are so high up that we cant take good pictures of them. As in the Verdon Gorge it has been possible to successfully resettle vultures in the Cévennes.

On the high plateau of the Causse Noir is a bizarre rock formation which has been created by erosion. It is called the "Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux" and is the aim of thousands of tourists, so that it is even worth them offering tourist trips in a small trackless railway. We choose to go by foot and select one of the longer tours from the list of well-marked paths. It proves to be further than expected.

The start is harmless and Elli takes plenty of time to document the complete plant life of the region. Many of the beauties are unknown, but researches unearth the name at least of the delicate white flower on the right. It is a variety of orchid called Cephalanthera (or Ceph).

The rocky sculptures remind one of a sunken ruined city and for a long time it was thought to have been that. It was only in 1870 that a path was created through the rocks. Since then they have been thoroughly mapped and given names.

The forces of erosion on the limestone of the high plateau have produced not only rocks pillars but also caves (l), some of considerable size.
In places tree roots on the path cover the thin humus like a maze of blood-vessels (r) so that care needs to be taken where you tread.

Unexpectedly this formation is not called The Elephant (with keeper), but - showing a certain cultural style - "Porte de Mycene", the Gate of Mycene.

Towards evening our planned short walk becomes more energetic than expected with climbs up steep paths and stairways, but it offers fine views out over the rocky scenery as far as into the Jonte Gorge (centre of picture).

Next morning we drive down from the high plateau back to the gorges. Yesterday we came out of the Jonte Gorge (right in the upper picture), today we want to visit the Tarn Gorge (just left of centre in the upper picture). The village of Peyreleau (in both pictures) is perched on a small elevation in the valley.

The Cévennes were the scene of the bloody persecution of the Huguenots in the 17th and 18th Cs. The absolutist ruler Louis XIV wanted to either convert the French Protestants, here called Camisards, back to Catholicism, or to wipe them out. Numerous prisoners landed in the Tour de Constance in Aigues Mortes. Despite brutal civil war some of the dissidents were able to hide in this inaccessible area and to pass on their faith until finally the French Revolution brought religious freedom. This bloody period left the Cévennes devastated and impoverished.

First impressions of the Tarn Gorge, one of the Frances most popular tourists attractions.

Zooming in onto the ruined bridge in the previous picture we get a better view of the delightfully crystal-clear turquoise water.

High up on the eroded cliff walls of the 400 - 500m deep gorge we spy abandoned cliff dwellings. This one seems to scream out from the cliff like a lost soul.

Down below there are rocky overhangs to be negotiated. Our camping bus is 2.7m high, but after seeing mobile homes with a height of at least 3.5m coming past we relax and drive on trustingly.

For canoeists the Tarn Gorge is not a technical challenge, but nevertheless the enthusiasm of the two in the left picture can be felt as they glamourously master the rapids.
At one of the most beautiful view points - we are up at the road - an armada of little boats approaches. The orange group at the rear is relatively chaotic (r).
It reminds us of what our son told us about when he was suddenly given the challenge of canoeing in the Tarn Gorge during a Confirmation Camp.

The orange group floats in a disorderly group towards us - the people in the kayaks look so small that they must be children - perhaps German confirmees. The leader in the green canoe waves up to us, probably also to make clear to the children that they are on camera (l).
You dont have to canoe the whole 35 km length of the gorge. There are places in the middle to start or stop (r).

To actually feel the water of the Tarn we scramble down to the shore and hang our feet into the river.
We are fascinated by the numerous little Lycaenidae butterflies, which are probably still enjoying their hatching party and first sunbathe.

The Tarn Gorge ends at Saint Enimie and we follow the serpentine road back up onto the high plateau.
The Cévennes do indeed offer plenty of variety and are worth visiting.
