Umfriedete  Kirchen
danach

Parish Closes
then

Between the rivers Aulne and Elorn in Finistère lie further landmarks of Brittany, the Parish Closes  ("Enclos Paroissiaux"), which are unique in the world. They usually consist of a church, a Calvary, a cemetery, an ossuary and a surrounding wall with one opening in it, at which there is a triumphal gate.
In the pretty township of Guimiliau a particularly fine example of one stands near the market square. The photo shows the church and part of the surrounding wall.

The Parish Close of Guimiliau supersedes the other walled churches of the area with the diversity of its sculptures. That can particularly be seen in the south portal which is richly decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Here remains of the original painting of the figures can be observed. As all the sculptures are made out of local granite, which is difficult to work, they often seem rather clumsy and naive, even grotesque. With painting it was possible to show further details of the original figures.

In contrast to the grey exterior the interior of the church seems friendly and cheerful. Baptistry, organ and pulpit are decorated with fine oak carvings (l).
Because of the artistically carved and painted figures the altars look no less impressive (r).

I discovered this long carved frieze dated 1606  above a portal door and thought it impressive enough to make a panorama photo of. On the far left is a group of people in mediaeval clothes, with the one-legged man on the right of the group standing on crutches. The smallest figure of the group is carrying something on his head and seems to be suffering terribly, but we couldnt find out the significance of it.
The middle clearly represents part of the creation story. God pulls Eve out of Adams side.
The mixture of biblical and day-to-day stories is typical for the sculptures in the Parish Closes.

The magnificent Calvary ("Calvaire") in front of the church was erected between 1581 and 1588. On it both contemporary and biblical scenes are shown. With its 200 figures it is the second largest one in Brittany.

For a long time there was competition between the parishes in the two river valleys. Between the 15th and 18th Cs the rural communities became wealthy from sea trade and from the production of cloth and erected the gorgeously decorated Parish Closes.
St. Thegonne (picture) is reckoned to be the best-preserved Parish Close.

When the grave space in the sacred ground around the church were full the bones of those long dead were exhumed, carefully numbered and preserved in specially constructed ossuaries. The two-storey ossuary of St. Thegonnec is one of the architecturally finest examples.

For comparison, we visited a fine ossuary in Sedlec near Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic.

After visiting the Parish Closes we drive on along the coast of Brittany, this time to the Côte d'Emeraude, the Emerald Coast. In the current fine weather it is easy to see why the name was given to this section of coast. The sea near the coast really has a lovely emerald colouring.
Our target is Cap Fréhel, a bird sanctuary in wild coastal countryside. Its lighthouse is just visible in the background of the picture (half right).

At Cap Fréhel there are two lighthouses. The one on the left was built by Vauban in the 17th C, the one on the right in 1950. At certain times the latter one can be visited.

The cliffs drop 70m into the sea and are made of red sandstone and black slate - this section is clearly red sandstone. On the steep cliffs around the small tower numerous seabirds such as European Shags and Gulls have their nests.

Some of the rock formations are themselves very respectable towers.

A Herring Gull has built its nest on a small rocky ledge (upper left). Three chicks have hatched and two are still in the nest, but one has fallen down the rock and lies apparently exhausted a few steps down. The mother spends a lot of time near it before she looks after the other two again. We are afraid that the helpless chick will be taken by a bird predator, but when we come past next day we see the three chicks are back in the nest again. No idea how it managed it.

The view back along Cap Fréhel with its steep cliffs and the two lighthouses.

Walking around Cap Fréhel we come on the other side to densely populated breeding cliffs (lower centre in picture) just off shore. They are near enough so that the birds can be observed with binoculars, but far enough so that the birds are not disturbed by careful visitors.
At the right edge of the picture just below the middle the cliff has a flat ledge which can easily be climbed down to and which makes a good observation platform.
On the rocky peninsular in the background is a mediaeval fort that Vauban developed as a fortification ("Fort La Latte") and that has been used several times as a movie-set (e.g. for The Vikings with Kirk Douglas).

After getting into position on the cliff opposite the breeding area, (and with us two young students who are carrying out a bird count), we watch the colony of European Shags for some time. The birds belong to the cormorant family but are a little smaller with no white on the feathers.
Our small feeding series above - click on picture - shows the young bird in the middle of the picture waggling with its wings to beg from the parent bird on the left. The second young bird on the right doesnt take part.
Young birds are distinguished from adults by their lighter and browner colouring.
The parent opens its bill wide (it can disengage the joint of the bill) and seems to swallow the young birds head. The other young bird enviously watches the success of its siblings begging.
A later picture shows how absurdly deep the head of the young bird reaches into the parents throat. The whole process is not gentle but is accompanied by vigourous pushing and pulling and looks like an act of violence.
The next three pictures show a further feeding session. The young bird begs again with flapping wings, then disappears into the parents throat to fish for some tasty stomach contents and finally pulls its head out again.

Several times we observe birds offering their partners what looks like nesting material as a present (l), (although the Shags lay their eggs directly on the rocks without a nest).
The present may however be refused if it is too small or for some reason unacceptable. In this case after some consideration the present is accepted (r).

Behind the Shag and Gull cliff is a further rocky island whose steep cliff is the home of densely packed Common Guillemots, which remind us of small penguins.
The Guillemots eggs are pointed at one end to make rolling off the rock less likely. When the young birds reach three weeks old and are still incapable of flight they plunge from the rocks. Even if they land on a rock they mostly survive as they have been fed up to have a good fat layer. After that they explore the sea with their parents, (Wikipedia).

This picture shows from right to left: the cliff projecting into the sea with bird watchers on it, next to that the Gull and Shag cliff, then the Guillemots rock and on the far left the steep cliff of the mainland at Cap Fréhel.

The Côte d'Emeraude, the Emerald Coast, lives up to its name. The light-coloured rocks near the coast that are washed over with the green sea give the impression that someone has tipped a sack full of emeralds into the water.

The good weather and the north-east orientation of the coast ensure that we have some magnificent sunsets. That each one is different from the others is often only visible when looking at the telephoto pictures afterwards. This one looks like a Cheeseburger sinking down through a sea of tomato sauce, (to use Ellis rather unromantic comparison).

Regretfully we say good-bye to the coast of Brittany and set off towards the east and home.
We see St. Malo briefly from the road across the bay. In the 2nd WW the town was almost completely destroyed, but in contrast to many other Brittany towns with war damage it was rebuilt to its original condition using the old plans.
