Côte de Granit Rose

Île Grande, Les Sept Îles
(1 + 7 = 8)

Acht Inseln und eine Basstölpelkolonie

Eight islands and a Gannet colony

The pink granite coast called Côte de Granit Rose impressed us on our first visit some years ago, so we want to see it again. We follow the camping site tip of another mobile home driver who recommended the Île Grande, the largest island of the granite coast, as an attractive place to camp. He proves to be correct, as the individual sites are scattered around in the dunes and some have a direct view of the sea. Even for those like us who are not assigned a site directly on the coast it is still very attractive. Only a few steps away is a fine bay which invites us out for an evening walk.

An old tower, visible on the previous picture only as a thin line, helps navigation into and out of the harbour.

The sunset seen from Île Grande was well worth waiting for!

The sun gets wider, seemingly offering resistance to being pulled below the horizon, but all is to no avail.

Next day we drive to Tregtastel to buy tickets for the special trip around the Sept Îles (Seven Islands), a nature reserve with large bird colonies. However the ticket office is not open here and we are directed to the quay in Perros-Guiric where the boots start out from.
We wander down to the beach at Tregastel and admire the water-smoothed granite blocks. Their size is only evident by comparison with something, e.g. with the two sunbathers beneath them on the far left.
A man is carrying an inflatable boat on his back along the slipway. A few meters further on he lowers the same boat down towards the sandy beach on the right. To liven up the panorama picture (made of three images taken from one side to the other, I also incorporated the boat carrier from an image taken 1 or 2 seconds previously.

Near one of the most beautiful stretches of coast of the  Côte de Granite Rose, (left, part of the old Customs Path), the Sept Îles (Seven Islands) are strung out in a row. The island on the far right, Île Rouzic, is home to a huge colony of Northern Gannets, the only one in France. If the picture is expanded a small white cap can be seen above the island, formed by the Gannets flying around above the colony. The colony itself is on the far side of the island.
It was no problem booking the boat trip in Perros Guirec for the afternoon, (in the high season it is probably not so easy). It takes us firstly to the island with the bird colony, then along the chain of the archipelago towards the left, across to the fascinating Ploumanac'h harbour and then back to the starting point.

After a journey of about 45 minutes we near the Île Rouzic, which looks as if half covered with snow, with snow flurries in the air around it. (For clarity we show a picture here from the return trip.) About 20000 Gannets breed here on the southernmost Gannet colony in Europe.

Much of the information used about Gannets comes from Wikipedia.

As the ship approaches, the breeding colony is seen to be a steep rocky cliff occupied by brilliant white Gannets. The birds, which weigh between 3 and 3.4kg, prefer steep slopes or rocky ledges for their nests as they cant take off from flat ground. If suitable places are rare, then the Gannets nest if necessary on island ridges. But then they have to waddle through the very aggressive colony to take off from a rocky ledge, which subjects them to considerable stress. On the ground their gait is inelegant, almost laughable.

The air is filled with the "rab-rab" calls of the parent birds taking off and landing (l). The distribution of the nesting places looks very regular, as the birds spread themselves out to be far enough from neighbours that two breeding birds with outstretched necks dont quite reach each-other.
Gannets lay just one egg that they brood for 42 to 46 days. As we couldnt find any young birds on our pictures we assume that at the beginning of June the young have not yet hatched.

When our ship with about 100 passengers on board approaches the island numerous Gannets swimming on the water take off. the lively boat traffic doesnt seem to hinder breeding success as the colony, here as elsewhere, is continuously growing. Also the reverse side of the island is not approached by the boats. Gannets are not seen as endangered as they are no longer caught and eaten as used to be the case.

Separated from the actual breeding area sit the 4-5 year-old single young birds. Sometimes they build a trial nest, even though they have no young to brood, (maybe the birds in the centre of the left picture?), and practise the aggressive nest protection. The two birds further right demonstrate the friendly greeting with their bills that firm lifelong partners use.
Nest-building continues through the whole season . Especially the males keep on bringing nest material, (r), that unfortunately often consists of plastic rubbish or bits of old fishing nets, in which the young can strangle themselves.

The Gannet has trouble walking and taking off but once in the air glides magnificently (l). This enables it to travel up to 300km from its nest to fish for food, which mainly consists of herring and mackerel. The special arrow-like anatomy of the birds with the very marked head (r) enables its unusual fishing technique.

We see no Gannets diving near the rocks, their fishing ground must be further away. If the Gannet discovers a swarm of fish when it flies over at a height of 20 to 40m it tucks in its wings and plummets headfirst like a shot arrow into the sea, hitting the water at a speed of up to 100 km/h. It dives to below the swarm and catches a fish on the way up again, swallowing it under water. The French named the bird which dived headfirst into the sea and always came up without prey the "Fou (Fool) de Bassan". (Bass comes from the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth in Scotland, where there is a large colony and which gave the species its Latin name, Morus bassanus.)

There is also a smaller population of Puffins breeding on the Sept Îles and here a group of them swim along near the rocks and dive for food.

One Puffin comes rather closer to the boat and dives elegantly. (Click on the picture to see.)

Herring gulls accompany the ship during the trip along the chain of islands hoping for food offerings from the tourists.
While taking pictures with both cameras the  telephoto lens of the Canon gets into the picture of the small Lumix camera (l). On the right is the result of the corresponding Canon picture from the swaying ship.

If we had booked a rather longer trip we could have landed on one of the other islands, Île aux Moines, and explored the island for 45 minutes.
A sailing boat is anchored scenically in the bay.

The  Île aux Moines (Monks Island) from a distance and from the other side. There is a lighthouse and also the remains of a fort in Vauban style.

We leave the ship in Perros Guirec after a highly enjoyable round trip and later walk along the old Customs Path of the Côte de Granite Rose in the warm evening light. 300 million years of erosion have formed the granite blocks into fantastic sculptures.

The beautiful coastal path near Perros Guirec, which during the day is not surprisingly crowded with tourists, is ours almost alone in the late evening. Just some other photographers - some with alarmingly professional-looking equipment - are about.
In the 10 years since we last visited here the rocks have not changed but now the access to them is limited in some places to enable the vegetation to recover.

The Robin seems to approve of the protective measures. (The sign says: Protected natural site - restoration of the vegetation).

The Robin is obviously very used to visitors - doesnt want to abandon his favourite perch - and lets us come very close.
The Wren calling from the gorse thicket is more cautious.

Eine weitere rosa Felsformation vor der Granitküste. Im Hintergrund sieht man Teile der Sept Îles.

Another of the pink rock formations on the Granite Coast. In the background part of the Sept Îles group can be seen.

The people on the right illustrate the size of the rocky sculptures. We give our own names to the formations - probably like most of the other visitors to the 9km long Pink Granite Coast. For us this is a Monkeys Head.

This photo was taken during the round trip on the ship which included a curve into the Bay of Ploumanac'h. So panorama photos are also possible from a moving ship!

The lighthouse and the house in the Bay of Ploumanac'h, thickly strewn with pink boulders, is among the most beautiful and popular photo motives in France.
