Gibraltar, GB

Ein Außenposten

An Outpost

If The Rock hadnt suddenly appeared, it would have been difficult to find Gibraltar. Even then we were almost put off by the unbelievably long queue at the border - something that has become unusual at national borders within Europe.
Between 1969 and 1985 the border was completely closed, so it could be worse! Anyway, after coming so far we want to visit this last outpost of Britain on the European continent.

The Spaniards do their bit to make Gibraltar invisible. On the whole stretch from Ronda to Gibraltar the first sign we saw to Gibraltar was only about 2km from the border. This one about 200m from the border has been subjected to a more private campaign.

We realize afterwards that the long border queue has another reason. The only access road to Gibraltar is directly across the airport runway and aeroplanes are fortunately given priority. So we all wait at the traffic lights for the landing, probably from Britain, as flights to and from Spain are still not allowed.
In the 2nd WW a runway was built on the local racing track. All the inhabitants were evacuated and town, Straits of Gibraltar and Rock were dedicated to military use. When the runway became too short, the extension was built directly out into the sea.

The Britishness of Gibraltar seems like a caricature after weeks in Spain.  On the crowded streets we hear almost only English.
We change some Euros into Pounds, (partly to be able to pay the parking fee, partly for interest in the coins,) and order fish and chips. We have had better. (Elli says it was not up to the usual British standard - nice of her.)
I also shop successfully for Marmite - try to find that in Germany!

The fascination that Gibraltar exudes bases on a mixture of proud military history, of which highly polished mementoes are on display, British mass tourist restaurants and, as there is no VAT, numerous offers of relatively cheap alcoholic drinks, electronic and  optical goods etc.

We are relieved to leave the overfilled shopping zone and - after successfully resisting the selling pitch of a taxi driver, who wanted to drive us up to see the monkeys on the rock for only 20 Pounds, with guarantee that we would see some, which with the cable-car trip is not guaranteed, etc etc - discover a very pleasant botanic garden, also not free of military knick-knacks.

This verdant corner of British territory flourishes here without greenhouse treatment.

Peace and colour in the park. Nasturtiums

Now and then there is a small reminder of British heritage.

(Quelle: Wikipedia)

We move back into the bustling streets and walk past enormous old military bunkers - there are 50km of excavated tunnels that can also be visited, but our time today is limited and that is not a priority for us.
We reach the attractive waterfront and here look back  at the town and the slopes of the Rock.

By the way,  in a referendum in 2002 (with 90% participation), over 95% of the people of Gibraltar wanted to remain under British rule. Only 187 wanted shared rule. (Source: Wikipedia)

In this only 6.4 square km enclave with a mostly rocky coastline, nature has a limited offer of bathing beaches.

We hope to achieve what we didnt manage on our trip to Sicily, namely to see Africa from Europe. We drive to the southernmost point of the peninsular, the Europa  Point, where the on closer inspection not very inspiring -looking last shop in Europe would offer us  much cheapness if it were open.

On Gibraltar the cultures live apparently peacefully together. The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim mosque was donated by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia to the Muslim population. (About 2000 people, 7% of the population.)
In front of it are numerous desert-trekking style jeeps ready for transport to Africa.

This panorama picture combines the significant sights as seen from the southern point: lighthouse, last shop, jeeps, mosque and the 426m high Rock.

I climb onto the pedestal with the information map to capture the information.

Africa is only 28 km away.

The primates on Gibraltar!
What we didnt realize was possible, namely to drive up the mountain in our own car and to see the Barbary Apes, proves to be no problem in the evening (during the day it may be different). Nobody hinders us and a further car full of small children with their parents reaching this previously military viewpoint and then afterwards along the high road where some monkeys are.
While the children walk around happily near the unprotected edge of the concrete platform, taking turns with the binoculars we have lent them, the mother takes the picture of us (centre!) and - yes - in the distance the Moroccan coast.

This is also taken from the same viewpoint, showing the misty Europa Point away to the left and the coastal cliffs in the centre..

Back to the Barbary Apes, the only primates (apart from humans) living out of captivity in Europe. Despite the name they are monkeys (not apes), are fed every day by a member of the Royal Navy and have the reputation of being mean. We briefly leave the car to take photos and return to find this one dedicating its efforts to trying to bite through our car antenna. It snarls at me angrily when I shoo it away.

They say as long as the monkeys remain on the Rock, the British will as well. The view down from the monkeys rock to the large port gives the impression that both are well-established.
In the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, Britain was granted Gibraltar in perpetuity.

And so the sun sets peacefully again over this thorn in the flesh of Spain.
We are grateful that, despite the initial negative impression, our day in Gibraltar has turned out to be so interesting.
