Franz, Thomas und ich (John) kommen beim treuen Schiff Alge, Nagold, nach einer Übernachtfahrt aus Deutschland in der Marina von Sukosan an. Sukosan liegt wenige Kilometer südlich von Zadar. Eberhard ist schon an Bord. Er, Gerlinde und Tochter Cornelia haben eben einen zweiwöchigen Törn mit zwei weiteren Freunden abgeschlossen.
Franz, Thomas and I arrive at the good ship Alge (= Algae/ Seaweed) of Nagold in the marina at Sukosan, a few kilometres south of Zadar after driving through the night from Germany. Eberhard is already on board. He and Gerlinde and daughter Cornelia have just finished a two week trip with two further friends.

Wir setzen uns zu Getränken und Eis mit Gerlinde und Cornelia hin, bevor sie die Rückfahrt nach Deutschland antreten.

Als Erstes sind Schiffsformalitäten in Zadar zu erledigen, und wir müssen noch einkaufen. Wir nutzen die Chance, um uns etwas in der Altstadt umzuschauen.
Die erste Besiedelung von Zadar geht auf die Illyrer im 9.Jh. v.Chr. zurück. Seitdem hat die Stadt vielen Herren gehört. Sie wurde viele Jahre lang von Venedig beherrscht, wie noch an der Architektur zahlreicher Gebäude zu erkennen ist, und auch vom Osmanischen Reich.
First there are some ship formalities to be done in Zadar, and we need to do some shopping as well, so we take the chance to look around the old town.
The earliest settlers in Zadar were the Illyrians right back in the 9th century BC, but it has passed through many hands since then. It was ruled for many years by Venice, as can be seen in the architecture of many of the buildings, and also by the Ottoman Empire.

The quickest connection between the old town and the Zadar marina is with this rowingboat-ferry.
Die uralte Kirche des Hl. Donatus wurde im 9.Jh. gebaut.

Daneben steht die Kathedrale der Heiligen Anastasia mit einem beeindruckenden Glockenturm. Anastasia starb als Märtyrerin unter dem römischen Kaiser Diokletian (dessen Palast wir letztes Jahr in Split besucht haben).
Next to it is the cathedral of St.Anastasia with its imposing bell-tower. Anastasia was martyred under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, (whose palace we visited last year in Split).
