Zum Gletscher

 To the glacier

Von Saltstraumen, dem stärksten Gezeitenstrom der Welt, brechen wir heute auf Richtung RV 17. Die Straße gilt als die schönste Küstenstraße Nordnorwegens. Entlang der tief ins Land ragenden Fjorde der Provinz Nordland führt sie durch eine zauberhafte, zerklüftete Berg- und Inselwelt.
Für uns ist sie ein Luxus, den wir uns nach reiflicher Überlegung gönnen wollen. Die ca. 230km, die wir auf ihr zurücklegen, werden von zwei Fährstrecken unterbrochen, die für Auto mit Wohnanhänger besonders teuer sind.

We set off today on the RV17 from Saltstraumen, where the most powerful tidal current in the world can be seen. The road is described as northern Norways most beautiful coastal route. It runs along the fjords which cut deep into the province of Nordland and it leads through magical scenery with craggy mountains and islands.
Using it is a luxury which we have decided to allow ourselves. The 230 km stretch is interrupted by two ferries, which are especially expensive for a car with a caravan.

Ungewollt dehnen wir die schöne Strecke zusätzlich aus, als wir nach einer kurzen Rast diese Brücke überqueren im Glauben, es handle sich um die Küstenstraße. Sie führt uns jedoch auf die Insel Sandhornoya.

We unintentionally extend the coastal stretch by taking a wrong turn over this bridge, thinking it is the coastal road. In fact it leads onto Sandhornoya Island.

Die Buchten auf Sandhornoya sind bestückt mit Rorbuern (Fischerhütten) und zahlreichen Booten.

The bays on Sandhornoya are decorated with fishing huts and numerous boats.

In den geschützten Winkeln wuchern die Pflanzen. Wir unterbrechen unsere Fahrt - noch nicht wissend, dass es eine Irrfahrt ist -, um Kleeblüten aufzunehmen...

In sheltered places plants grow profusely. We interrupt our travels - still not realizing that we are on the wrong road - to photograph clover...

...und natürlich deren Besucher! Die vibrierenden Flügel der arktischen Hummeln glänzen in der Sonne, und die honigfarbene Hummel rechts übt Bockspringen über eine Kleeblüte hinweg.

... and of course the clovers visitors! The vibrating wings of the arctic bumblebee (l) glint in the sunshine and the honey-coloured bumblebee on the right plays leapfrog over the clover blossoms.  

Am äußeren Rand der Insel angekommen, erhaschen wir einen Blick auf das Meer und die vorgelagerten Inseln.
Zwischen dem Küstenstreifen rechts im Bild und der Insel Landegode in Bildmitte erkennt man die gezackte, teilweise noch schneebedeckte Berglinie der Lofoten (besser zu sehen nach Vergrößerung).
Als die Straße plötzlich nicht mehr weiterführt, erkennen wir unseren Irrtum, wenden das Gespann und suchen den Weg zurück zur Küstenstraße 17.

When we reach the northern coast of the island we get a view out over the ocean and the coastal islands.
The jagged and partly snow-covered peaks of the Lofoten Islands can be seen (more easily if the picture is enlarged) between the coastal strip on the right and Landegode Island left of centre.
When the road suddenly comes to an end our suspicion is confirmed that we have taken a wrong road. We turn the caravan and retrace our tracks to the 17 coastal route.

Wir halten mehrmals an, um uns auf der Karte zu orientieren. Dabei entdecken wir in einem kleinen Ort auf dem Wellblechdach einer Hütte diesen Austernfischer, der sich äußerste Mühe mit der Körperpflege gibt. Als er mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden ist, spaziert er stolz den Dachfirst entlang.

We stop several times to get oriented with the map. In a little locality we watch this oystercatcher on a corrugated roof taking great care with its preening. Finally, satisfied with the result, it struts proudly along the ridge of the roof.

Sie will er wohl damit beeindrucken. Auf der anderen Straßenseite, jedoch im Blickfeld des Firstläufers, befindet sich ein weiterer Vogel, sicherlich das Weibchen. Es hat sich diesen Blumenkübel vor einem Haus als Nistplatz auserkoren.
Austernfischer machen beim Nestbau keine großen Umstände: Mit dem Körper wird eine Vertiefung in den weichen Untergrund gedrückt, und fertig ist die Kinderstube.

This is who he is obviously trying to impress. On the other side of the road in good view of the roof walker is another bird, certainly the female. It has chosen this flower box in front of a house for its nest.
Oystercatchers dont spend a lot of energy building nests. They press their bodies into soft earth to form a shallow hollow and the cradle is ready.

Wenn das letzte Schirmchen den Löwenzahn verlässt, ist auch nördlich des Polarkreises der Sommer angebrochen.

Even north of the arctic circle, when the last seed with its little parachute leaves the dandelion the summer has started.

Zurück auf der Küstenstraße macht diese berühmte Strecke ihrem Ruf alle Ehre.
Scharen von Seevögeln fliegen dicht über der Storvika- Bucht. 14km entfernt befindet sich links die Insel Fugloya. Daneben erhebt sich die Insel Sandhornoya, um die wir gerade geirrt sind (Bildmitte). Ihr zur Rechten liegt die Landzunge des Festlands mit dem kleinen Ort Finnes an der Spitze und mit Storvik in der kurvigen Bucht.

Back on track. The famous 17 coastal road fulfils its reputation for beauty.
Flocks of gulls fly low over the calm Storvika Bay. 14 km away on the left is Fugloya Island. Beyond it in the middle is Sandhornoya Island where we strayed before. Right of centre is the headland of the nearer mainland coast with the little town of Finnes at the end of it and with Storvik in the curve to the right.   

Am Wegesrand finden sich wunderschöne Vertreter des Gefleckten Knabenkrauts, einer Orchideenart.

At the side of the road are beautiful representatives of the wild Early Purple Orchid.

Doch nicht nur die Blicke Richtung Inseln und offenes Meer sind atemberaubend, sondern auch diejenigen Richtung Land. Der blaue Nordfjord, der sich vor uns ausbreitet, gilt als einer der schönsten Fjorde Nordnorwegens. Er stößt an hohe Berge, die die zum Meer liegende Grenze des riesigen Saltfjellet und Svartisen Nationalparks bilden.

It is not only the views out to the open sea and to the islands that are breathtaking, but also those inland. The blue Nordfjord spread out in front of us and leading into Holandsfjord is counted as one of the most beautiful fjords in northern Norway. It abuts on high mountains which form the fjord-side border of the huge Saltfjellet and Svartisen national parks.

In Bildmitte mündet der schmale Nordfjord in den breiteren Holandsfjord, in den hinein die Gletscherspitzen des Svartisen entwässern.
Im kleinen Tourismuszentrum rechts buchen wir die letzte Fähre zur nächstliegenden Gletscherzunge, dem Engabreen (links hinten).

In the centre of the picture the narrow Nordfjord opens out into the wider Holandsfjord, into which the tongues of the Svartise glacier empty.
In the small tourist centre on the right we book the last ferry across to Engabreen, the nearest tongue of the glacier.

Der Svartisen ("Schwarzeis") bedeckt eine Fläche von 370qkm und ist somit der zweitgrößte Gletscher Norwegens. Über dem Holandsfjord zeigen sich an mehreren Stellen seine Bruchkanten.

Svartisen (Black Ice) covers an area of 370 km² and is thus Norways second largest glacier. There are ice falls at several places above the Holandsfjord.

An Bilder aus Thailand oder Vietnam erinnert uns dieser Anblick. Felsen stürzen senkrecht in türkisenes Wasser, und üppiges Grün klebt an steilen Hängen, die man nur mit Hilfe von Leitern überwinden kann, will man zum Boot in der winzigen Bucht gelangen.

This picture reminds us of pictures from Thailand or Vietnam. Rocky cliffs drop vertically into turquoise water and verdant green clings onto steep slopes which can only be climbed on ladders leading down to the boat in the tiny bay.

Von der Fähranlegestelle aus knipsen wir dieses friedliche Panorama vom Holandsfjord mit dem Svartisen-Nationalpark im Hintergrund.

Die Fähre bringt uns zur Anlegestelle unterhalb der Gletscherzunge des Engabreen. Dieser liegt nur wenige Meter über der Meeresoberfläche und ist somit der tiefstgelegene Gletscher des europäischen Festlands.

The ferry brings us across to the landing stage near the Engabreen glacial tongue. It is only a few metres above sea level and is thus the lowest lying glacier in mainland Europe.

Die Strecke durch Wiesen und Wälder erweist sich zeitraubender als erwartet. Um rechtzeitig zurück bei der Fähre zu sein, können wir nicht bis zum Eis hinaufsteigen. Hier, zwischen blassfelligen Kühen, am Fuße des Engabreen, entschließen wir uns zur Umkehr.

The path through meadows and woods to the glacier proves more time consuming than expected. We work out that there is unfortunately not enough time for us to reach the ice and then to get back in time for the last return ferry. Here among pale cows and not too far from Engabreen we decide to turn back.

Auch wenn es so aussieht, als hätten wir den Gletscher fast erreicht: Das Teleobjektiv hat uns so nahe ans Eis gebracht.

It looks here as if we almost reached the glacier, but the nearness is only thanks to our telephoto lens.

Auf dem Weg zurück zur Anlegestelle begleitet uns der Anblick des Engabreen. Nur der Vordergrund wechselt ständig: Hier wird der Gletscher gerahmt von zwei schönen Segelbooten.

The view of Engabreen accompanies us back to the landing stage. Only the foreground changes continuously. Here the glacier is framed by two pretty sailing boats.

Links der Weg und der Gletscher, rechts die Fähre, die bereits auf uns wartet. John deutet auf die Armbanduhr, während ich ein letztes Panoramabild schieße.

Geschafft! Wir sind nicht die letzten auf dem Schiff, dieses junge Paar aus Erfurt keucht in letzter Sekunde heran.
Allerdings ist es nicht wie wir zwischen den Kühen sitzen geblieben, sondern hat das Eis erreicht und dort eine Menge schöner Fotos geschossen. Zum Abschluss der Serie knipsen wir die beiden mit ihrer Kamera vor dem Gletscher - auf obigem Bild inspiziert der junge Mann  Johns Aufnahme.

We made it! We are not quite the last to reach the ship. This young couple from Erfurt breathes heavily as they hurry on at the last moment.
Walking briskly they have managed the whole distance, not just having to make do with the view from the cows as we did. They actually climbed up to the ice and took some excellent pictures. To complete their glacier pictures we take photos for them with their camera with the glacier as background - here the young man inspects the picture I have just taken.

Am Abend füllt sich der schöne Parkplatz am Holandsfjord mit Wohnmobilen. Der Platz besitzt nicht nur gute Toiletten, sondern auch eine Entsorgungsstation. Die Einladung der Norweger, hier kostenlos übernachten zu dürfen, scheint offensichtlich. Trotzdem hupen mehrere vorbei fahrende Autos, als sie gegen Abend Wohnmobile und Wohnwagen hier stehen sehen.
Wir empfinden viel Verständnis für diese Abwehrhaltung, als wir entdecken, dass der unverschämte Besitzer des belgischen Wohnmobils (li) seine Batterien füllt, indem er über Nacht kostenlosen Strom aus der Behindertentoilette abzweigt.

In the evening the fine parking place at Holand fills up with mobile homes. It is equipped not only with good toilets but also with waste disposal facilities. The Norwegians invitation to spend a night here seems obvious. Nevertheless several cars blow their horns when they pass and see mobile homes and caravans parked here.
We feel some sympathy for this defensive reaction when we notice that the brazen owner of the Belgian mobile home (l) is filling up his board battery by tapping free current during the night from the toilet for disabled people.  

Am nächsten Morgen zeigen sich der Holandsfjord und der sich anschließende Svartisen-Nationalpark in einem milden Licht.

Next morning the Holandsfjord and the Svartisen National Park above it are lit up by mild sunlight.
