Will man von Carta aus in die beeindruckende Bergwelt der Südkarpaten einsteigen, muss man eigentlich nur die nach Brasov führende Europastraße überqueren und befindet sich nach wenigen Kilometern am Fuße der dicht bewaldeten Berge. Die Sonne bringt das frische Grün an den zahlreichen Obstbäumen dieser äußerst fruchtbaren Ebene zum Leuchten.
Um die hohen Gipfel der Fagarascher Berge, die mit sieben Spitzen über 2500m die höchste Bergkette der gesamten Karpaten darstellen, ziehen aufgelockert dunkle Wolken.

If you want to approach the impressive mountain world of the Carpathians starting from Carta, you only have to cross over the European road leading to Brasov and after a few kilometres you are at the foot of the thickly wooded slopes. The sun lights up the fresh green of the numerous fruit-trees on the fertile plain.
Ahead of us are cloud-covered peaks. The Fagaras Mountains with 7 peaks over 2500m are the highest mountain chain of the whole Carpathians,      

Die Straße führt kräftig ansteigend durch das Naturschutzgebiet des Balea-Tals zu der Berggondel-Station auf 1234m Höhe (links). Diese liegt zu Füßen des Balea-Wasserfalls (Mitte), der sich aus dem größten Gletschersee der Karpaten, dem auf 2034m Höhe liegenden Balea-Lac speist. Dieser See ist unser Ziel.
Da eine Straße über diesen Kamm führt (übrigens auch eines von Ceausescus irrwitzigen Vorzeige-Projekten, das eigentlich wegen der Nähe zu einer guten Talstraße und seiner zeitlich sehr eingeschränkten Benutzbarkeit überflüssig ist), hoffen wir, diese heute, Anfang Mai, bis zum See hinauf befahren zu können. Ein Irrtum, wie sich rasch herausstellt (rechts). Weite Strecken der Bandwurm-Straße liegen noch unter Schnee, folglich benutzen wir die Gondel.

The road climbs up quickly through the Balea Valley nature reserve to the cable-car station at the memorable altitude of 1234m (left). This is near the foot of the Balea Waterfall (centre), which is fed by the run-off from the largest glacier lake of the Carpathians, the Balea Lake at 2034m. This lake is what we are aiming to reach.
A road (incidentally another one of Ceausescus prestige projects), is shown on our map leading up to the lake, and we hope to be able to drive up to it. It is soon obvious that it is still much too early in the year (early May) for this.  Much of the long serpentine road is still covered by snowdrifts, so we go up in the cable-car instead. (Cant remember the price, but after experiencing cable-car prices in Switzerland we found it inexpensive!)

Das haben wir nicht erwartet: Als hätten wir einen Zeitsprung zurück in den Winter unternommen, stehen wir inmitten meterhohen Schnees. Doch dieser ist in Auflösung begriffen. Der weiße Schneehaufen rechts im Bild stellt die Überreste eines Eispalasts dar, dessen Eisblöcke zu frostigeren Zeiten aus dem Baleasee herausgeschnitten werden.
Fürs Skifahren reichen die Schneemassen noch allemal.

We didnt expect this. We have travelled in time back into winter and here there is metre-deep snow, although the thaw has started. The white pile of snow right of centre is the remains of an ice palace, for which blocks of ice were cut out of the Balea Lake.
There is certainly enough snow around for plenty of skiers. 

Dies ist ein 360 Grad Panorama, bestehend aus 11 Bildern. Links sieht man die Bergstation der Gondelbahn, daneben eine Wetterstation und eine Berghütte. Zwischen dieser Hütte und dem Gebäude in der Bildmitte liegt, noch völlig zugefroren, der Gletschersee. Ganz rechts (aber auch ganz links, da die Ansicht ja 360 Grad beträgt) blickt man ins steil abfallende Tal des Baleabachs hinunter, an dessen Ende sich Carta und das Olt-Tal befinden (wahrscheinlich noch immer im Sonnenschein).

This rather dark picture is a 360° panorama (can be expanded) made up of 11 pictures. On the left is the top station of the cable-car. Between the buildings on the left and the dark restaurant building in the middle is the glacial lake, still completely frozen and snow-covered. On the far right (and also on the far left) is the steeply falling valley of the Balea River, at the end of which are Carta and the Olt Valley, (which are still probably enjoying sunshine).

Es beginnt zu schneien, und wir suchen den Schutz einer Berghütte auf. Die Cabana Balea-Lac ist ganz in deutscher Hand und bietet einen Drei-Sterne-Service an. Sie liegt auf einer Landzunge mitten im Gletschersee. Um die Wende herum brannte sie ab, wurde aber im Jahr 2000 wiederaufgebaut. Sie ist eine der meistbesuchten Berghütten der Karpaten, da - von den guten Skimöglichkeiten während des Winters abgesehen - von hier aus im Sommer prächtige Kammwanderungen unternommen werden können.

Ein Blick in den schmelzenden Eispalast (rechts) offenbart einen zurückgelassenen Kühlschrank, jetzt erbärmlich den Witterungen ausgesetzt. Im Winter ist er wohl eher ein Wärmeschrank, der die tiefen Minusgrade der Umgebung zu angenehmen Kühltemperaturen hochregelt.

It starts to snow and we look for shelter in one of the skiing restaurants. The Cabana Balea Lake (left) is safe under German control and offers 3 star service. It is on a tongue of land out into the glacial lake. It burnt down in about the 1980s, was rebuilt in 2000 and is one of the most popular mountain huts in the Carpathians.
As well as good winter skiing here this is a good centre in summer for fine mountain ridge walking.

A glance into the remains of the melting ice palace (right) reveals a fridge now mercilessly exposed (including electrical cables) to the elements.     

In einer anderen Hütte gönnen wir uns ein Essen. Wir wollen etwas Rumänisches, doch bei dem schließlich Gelieferten sind wohl eher die Verzierungen ungewöhnlich. Käseraspeln auf Pommes, dazu Sauerrahm und ein Essiggürkchen (Rumänien ist Gurkenland!), viel Schweinefleisch und eine begeisterte Köchin, die sich freut, dass wir ihr Essen knipsen. Es hat auch tatsächlich gut geschmeckt.

After waiting a while in the Cabana and not getting  served, (to be fair, there was a lot going on and   too few people serving), we go to the other restaurant for a meal.
We want to eat something Romanian, but when delivered it is mostly the  decoration that is unusual. Grated cheese on the potato chips, soured cream, pickled cucumber (Romania is cucumber country!), escalope of pork and an enthusiastic cook who is pleased when we photograph her food. It tasted good as well.

Die Wildbäche, die sich von den hohen Gipfeln der Karpaten herabstürzen, haben tiefe Kerben in die Berglandschaft geschnitten und dadurch wunderschöne Täler geformt.
Etwas weiter östlich begeben wir uns wiederum in ein solch enges Tal hinein. Es beherbergt im Ort Sambata ein berühmtes, lebendiges Kloster. Kurz vor dem Talbeginn wird uns klar, dass das Kloster Brancoveanu etwas Besonderes sein muss: So viele schöne neue Häuser auf einem Fleck sind uns bisher in Rumänien noch nicht begegnet. Viele davon sind Pensionen.

The streams and rivers tumbling down from the high areas of the Carpathians have cut deep, beautiful  valleys into the mountain scenery.
Now rather further to the east we drive towards one of these valleys. In the small town of Sambata it is home to a well-known, active monastery. Shortly before the start of the valley as such it becomes clear that the Brancoveanu Monastery must be something special. We havent seen so many fine new houses in one area anywhere in Romania up to now. Many of them are guest-houses.

Inmitten der rundlichen, buchenbewachsenen Hügel liegt das Kloster. In diesem Moment wissen wir noch nicht, dass es neu ist. In keinem anderen von uns bisher bereisten Land haben wir so viele Neubauten von Kirchen und Klöstern entdeckt. Da die Rumänen es vortrefflich verstehen, baulich und künstlerisch an die alten orthodoxen Traditionen anzuknüpfen, können Laien wie wir den Unterschied zwischen alt und neu häufig nur schwer erkennen.
Auch der Eingang zum Kloster wurde traditionell, in der Kunst meisterlicher Holzbearbeitung, als prächtig geschnitztes Tor gestaltet.

Surrounded by rolling, beech-covered hills lies the monastery. At this point in our visit we do not know that it is new. In no other land that we have visited so far have we seen so many newly built churches and monasteries. As the Romanians are highly skilled n following the old Orthodox traditions in both building and decoration, it is sometimes difficult for us as lay-people to discern between old and new.
The entrance to the monastery is through a traditionally built, skilfully carved, impressive wooden gateway, which, however, does not look very old.   

Was man nur ausmalen kann, wird ausgemalt. Von der Kuppe unter dem eigentlichen Klostereingang blickt Christus Pantokrator, der Allherrscher, auf den Eintretenden herab. Die Szene rechts stellt wohl Maria Heimgang dar, ein Fest, das bei den orthodoxen Rumänen allerhöchstes Ansehen genießt und hier in Sambata am 15. August mit mehrstündigen Feiern und zehntausenden Pilgern gefeiert wird.

There seem to be paintings everywhere. From the roof of the entranceway an icon of Christ Pantokrator (Lord of Everything) looks down at us. The scene in the right-hand picture shows the death scene of Mary. The feast in memory of that event is among the most important in the Orthodox calendar. On 15th August here at Sambata the feast is celebrated for many hours and is attended by thousands of pilgrims.

Nachdem wir den Torgang durchschritten haben, liegt der Klosterinnenhof vor uns. Die Gebäude erstrahlen in blendendem Weiß, und die Säulen und Podeste sind mit kunstvollen Steinbändern geschmückt. Wir gehen eine der breiten Treppen hinauf - niemand scheint uns daran hindern zu wollen - und blicken durch die Säulenvorhalle auf die Klosterkirche. Die Tür hinter uns steht offen, also treten wir ein.

On leaving the arched entranceway the central courtyard of the monastery is in front of us. The buildings are gleaming white and pillars and platforms are decorated with artistic stone friezes. We ascend one of the flights of stairs - no-one seems to object - and look out from a pillared platform at the monastery church. The door (behind us) is open, so we go in.

Eine neue, komplett fertiggestellte Kirchenhalle öffnet sich vor uns. Wir entdecken einige Merkmale, die uns aus anderen orthodoxen Kirchen bereits vertraut sind: die langen Stuhlreihen entlang der Wände für die Alten und Kranken (ansonsten stehen die Kirchenbesucher ja), die Ikonostase am Kopfende, hinter der sich das Mysterium verbirgt und die Ausmalung von jedem Zentimeter der Wände und Decken.
Nur sehen die Räume sonst wesentlich dunkler aus, was vielleicht daran liegen mag, dass Weihrauch und zahlreiche brennende Kerzen die Farbschichten im Laufe der Jahre verdunkeln.

We find ourselves in a new, freshly coloured church. We see several features that have become familiar from other orthodox churches: the long rows of chairs around the walls for the elderly and infirm (otherwise the congregation usually stands); the iconostasis at the front separating the nave from sanctuary and altar; the fact that every square centimetre of walls and ceiling is decorated.
What is different is that usually the rooms elsewhere    seem much darker. That probably results from the accumulations of years of burning candles and incense.

Das Kloster ist übrigens berühmt für seine Ikonenwerkstatt (und für sein Ikonenmuseum). Die Ikonen entstehen hier in aufwändiger Hinterglasmalerei und gehen in die ganze Welt. Auch die Ikonen an der Altarwand (links) sind wohl in dieser Technik gemalt. Vielleicht erkennt man dies, wenn man das Bild vergrößert.

Two vertical panorama pictures (each made up of two pictures) show the view up into the three cupolas.
The monastery is famous both for its icon studio and its icon museum. The icons here are created here in an involved process of back-painting glass with opaque colours. These are exported around the whole world. The icons on the altar wall on the left are presumably made using this technique.

Auch hier steht ein reich verzierter Stuhl, der wohl Jesus, dem Allherrscher, gewidmet ist.

A richly carved throne stands here as well, with fresh flowers in front of it.  The throne is presumably dedicated to Christ Almighty.   

Von oben werfen wir nochmals einen Blick auf den rechteckigen Klosterhof. Außer der Klosterkirche und den langen Gängen mit den Mönchszellen entdecken wir noch eine hölzerne Kapelle und ein Häuschen mit dem Klosterbrunnen.

Obwohl das Kloster selbst neu ist, es wurde ab 1926 wieder aufgebaut und in 1993 geweiht, befindet es sich doch auf traditionsreichem Boden. Viele Jahrhunderte lang stand hier ein bedeutendes Kloster, das die Verbindung zur Wallachei herstellte und die östlichen Landesteile mit akademischem Nachwuchs und Literatur versorgte.
 Den Habsburgern, die im 18.Jh. das Land eroberten, war es ein Dorn im Auge. Im Bemühen, die Macht Roms auszuweiten, bekämpften sie nicht nur die protestantischen sächsischen Kirchen, sondern auch die orthodoxen. Diese hier wurde 1785 in Grund und Boden geschossen. Nur die Ruine der Klosterkirche blieb stehen und ist deshalb wohl das originalste Gebäude dieses Ensembles.
Nach Jahrhunderten ruinösen Zustands wird das Kloster vom Bischof, dem Metropoliten Plamadeala von Sibiu, gezielt als geistliches Zentrum wiederaufgebaut und gefördert. Seit den Wendezeiten kommt Unterstützung auch von der katholischen Kirche in Deutschland.

We look again from above at the rectangular monastery cloister and courtyard. Besides the monastery church and the long arched cloister arcades with the monks cells we see also a small wooden chapel (r) and the little wooden hut covering the monastery well (l).

Although the monastery is relatively new - rebuilt from  1926 onwards and re-consecrated in 1993 - it stands on historic ground. Founded in 1696, an important monastery stood here for many centuries and was a link to Wallachia which provided the eastern parts of the country with academic talent and literature.
For the Habsburgs who conquered the country in the 18th century it was a source of irritation. In their efforts to extend the power of the Romane, they had to contend not only with the Protestant Saxon church but also with the Orthodox church. The monastery was razed by them in 1785. Only ruins of the monastery church remained, so the church is the most original part of the monastery buildings today.
After centuries of existence as a ruin, the monastery  is promoted and supported as a spiritual centre of learning by the metropolitan bishop of Sibiu, Dr. Antonie Plamadeala. It also receives support from the Roman Catholic church in Germany.           

Die neu errichtete theologische Akademie beherbergt ein Gästehaus mit mitteleuropäischem Standard.

The newly erected theological seminary includes accommodation for guests at central European standard.

Aus dem Hof dringt der dumpfe, rasche Schlag des Holzklöppels zu uns. Ein Mönch lädt zum Gebet, einige wenige Mönche folgen dem Ruf.
Als Siebenbürgen im Mittelalter unter osmanischer Herrschaft stand, verboten die Muslime das Läuten von Kirchenglocken. Der Ersatz aus diesen Tagen blieb als Tradition bis heute erhalten.

In the courtyard the rapid, dull thumping sound of hammering on a wooden beam can be heard. A monk is summoning to prayer and a few monks follow the summons.
When Transylvania was under Ottoman rule in the Middle Ages, the Moslems forbade the ringing of church bells. The substitute from those times lives on in tradition today.

Die dunklen, engen Räume der Klosterkirche erinnern uns schon mehr an typisch orthodoxe Kirchen. Die zahllosen Bilder von Heiligen und biblischen Szenen, Augen zum Himmel genannt, sind verrußt, doch die Atmosphäre wirkt hier drinnen viel mystischer. Die Ikonen auf dieser Wand dürften Hinterglasmalereien sein, ebenso wie die Ikone Maria mit Jesuskind auf dem Pult, der die orthodoxen Christen mit großer Ehrfurcht begegnen.

The dark, relatively narrow rooms of the monastery church remind us of other typical orthodox churches. The innumerable pictures of the saints and of biblical scenes, named eyes to heaven, are darkened with age, and the atmosphere in here seems very mystic. The icons on the walls are presumably done in back-painted glass. The icon of Mary and Child on the lectern is highly revered in the orthodox church.            

Die Schönheit der Arkadengänge hat es uns angetan. Wir sehen kaum Besucher oder Mönche. Schwer vorzustellen, dass das Kloster zu manchen Zeiten brechend voll sein soll.

We are very impressed by the beautiful arcaded cloister surrounding the square. We see very few visitors or monks.  Difficult to imagine that the monastery is sometime overcrowded.                   

Wir schlendern zur kleinen hölzernen Kapelle hinüber. Doch, da im rechten Eck habe ich gerade einen Mönch entdeckt!

We wander across to the little wooden chapel (and do actually spot another of the monks!).                    

Auch das Innere dieser Kapelle ist liebevoll ausgemalt.

Das kunstvoll geschnitzte Brunnenhäuschen zeigt innen biblische Szenen (z.B. Jesus und die Ehebrecherin) und lädt zum Schöpfen ein. Das Wasser muss etwas Besonderes sein, vielleicht wird es regelmäßig von den Mönchen geweiht.

The artfully carved well-house is decorated with biblical scenes, in particular Jesus talking to the adulteress at Jacobs well, and is an inviting place to draw water, particularly as the water is presumably frequently consecrated by the monks.             

Als wir gehen wollen, zieht ein Unwetter aus den Bergen heran und wirft einen besonderen Zauber über die gesamte Szenerie.

As we are about to leave, a thunderstorm coming across from the mountains darkens the sky and gives a magical appearance to the whole scene.
