Sighişoara (Schäßburg)

UNESCO Weltkulturerbe

UNESCO World Cultural Heritage

We are already feeling rather culturally sated by the varied impressions of the many fortified churches on the way (see previous chapter), so we approach this famous mediaeval treasure initially with a certain detachment. It is called the best preserved mediaeval town in central and south-eastern Europe. In addition it is surrounded by a complete defensive wall.
From the Hermann Oberth Square in the lower town, (named after the most famous son of the town), we look up to the upper town, the citadel, with over 150 dwelling houses, each many centuries old.
Sighisoara looks as if it comes straight out of a fairy story. German colonists founded it in the 12th century as the sixth fort (or administrative area, in Latin castrum sex) from a total of seven in Transylvania.

A very large Orthodox cathedral was built on the edge of the lower part of the old town at the start of the 20th century, giving a religious home to the growing number of Romanians.

On our way up to the citadel we see one of the defensive towers. It is the Smiths Tower and the Guild of Smiths was responsible for maintaining and manning it. The former 13 further towers, (8 of them still exist), were the responsibility of other guilds, e.g. the Tin-casters, the Tailors or the Butchers.

From the Smiths Tower we look back down at the lower town. It was built in the 16th century after space within the fortification walls had run out. It is made up of old and narrow streets, with one exception: Ceausescu wanted to tear down the whole old town to make space for modern buildings. As a start a swath was cleared through the lower town, in which a box-shaped department store now stands (not shown in the picture). His regime then collapsed. Sighisoara fortunately survived, the dictator didnt.

Flights of steps lead past interlaced, colourful rows of houses up to the upper town. The most famous tower, symbol of the town, is the Clock Tower, which both separates and connects the lower and upper towns and visually dominates both.

Under the Clock Tower is the main entrance to the citadel. It has an additional defensive gate and a covered Old Womens Passageway (left). After going through we look back through the arch from the upper town (right). The mighty walls date from the 14th century.

Inside the citadel the Clock Tower still dominates the scene. For centuries it housed the Town Hall, until it was made into the town museum in 1899, the function which it still fulfils today.

After a fire in the 16th century it was given a new clock and a new roof with four small towers, indicating that the town had the right to hold Blood Courts at which sentences to death or  mutilation were possible. The clock  rotating figures which are famous. These change places every hour. On the lower town side, (not visible here), are figures which change every day and even indicate the day of the week.
There is a saying that in Transylvania the clocks dont measure time but eternity.

The yellow house on the right is reputed to be the birth house of Vlad Tepes, alias Dracula. It is at any rate certain that as heir to the throne of Walachia he had asylum in it as a guest between 1431 and 1435. Today it houses the Vlad-Dracul restaurant.

Stolz wirbt das Restaurant mit dem Drachen (Dracula)-Symbol.

The restaurant proudly displays the symbol of the dragon (Dracula).

From the Clock Tower Tower Street leads up to the Castle Square, the largest and finest square in the citadel. Although some of the houses have been restored recently it has an air of nostalgic charm.
The panorama picture seems to show a large number of Roma people, (right of centre, men with dark hats), but in fact just 3 Roma men walked past and were captured on 3 of the 7 component pictures. (Expand the picture to see better.)
The lady and the boy sitting on the left have apparently noticed us as potential targets and later pester us after we have visited the Hill Church. The boy is sent as advance guard and we dont mind giving him a few coins. But then the lady, with a cultivated appearance and talking the German dialect of the Transsylvanian Saxons, offers us first a guided tour and then repeatedly asks for coffee. She claims to have a medical condition, (which weve never heard of), which makes it imperative that she drink coffee, and she doesnt seem to want to believe that we, tourists from the west, do not carry a stock of coffee in our car. If it was an indirect way of asking for money it irritated us enough that we were unwilling to understand, although we would have given her coffee. Later she follows us on our heels for some distance through the town.

We eat lunch in the pleasant, cultured atmosphere of the House with the Stag. (The horns are shown in the picture of the Castle Square above as well). This time we chose something Romanian: typical mashed corn with stuffed cabbage, sour cream and a filled Sighisoara pork sausage.

The Castle Square from another angle. Stalls are being set up for something. Every year a mediaeval festival takes place here (but that is not it).
After meagre years following the departure of the Transylvanian Saxons and the collapse of the Ceausescu regime tourism is now getting going.  Normal people can still afford to live in the citadel. We hope that  Sighisoara wont become one of the tourist meccas with endless rows of hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops, and where normal life has been squeezed out.

At the top of the citadel hill is the School Hill with the Hill Church, a romantic cemetery and the New School, which is still a Grammar School with a high reputation in which teaching takes place both in German and in Romanian.

The famous rocket scientist Hermann Oberth matriculated here in 1912 and later returned as teacher, after his dissertation at Heidelberg University had been rejected, due (as was later proved) to the incompetence of his university tutor. He held his first public lecture in Sighisoara in 1923 The rocket into planetary space. It was the Nazis who provided him with a post to do research.

Both these paths leading up the hill are still paved with old river-smoothed cobbles.

In 1642 a covered oaken stairway was constructed to make the strenuous climb up to the school pleasanter even in bad weather.

A pearl of the town is the Hill Church. This massive sacred building with a late Gothic nave was constructed  in 1345 on the site of a previous Romanesque structure.  Today the church is a museum in which endangered works of art from the abandoned fortified churches in the area are collected together. We are given a very professional guided tour in English by an art historian.

The choir of the Hill Church. On the left is where the sacrament was kept, the most beautiful tabernacle in Transylvania. The late 15th century font is a former stone collection box.
The frescoes are from pre-reformation times. When Empress Maria Theresa forced the town to erect a Catholic School in 1777, the town counsellors in defiance painted the frescoes over. In 1934 they were uncovered again.

The desire to capture this beautiful roof construction as a picture persuaded  us once again to try an overhead panorama picture (6 exposures).
To look at it properly first expand it and then hold the picture (rather easier with a laptop!) directly above your head!

In the porch of the church ancient storage chests are displayed. These were transferred here for safety from the fortified church in Bradeni (see previous chapter). There they were used by the population for the emergency rations kept for times of siege.

Our guide points out a special detail of one of the recently uncovered frescoes portraying the Holy Trinity. What is surprising is that the head on the left is that of a woman - early evidence of emancipation?

On the walls and pillars winged altar tableaux from the abandoned churches of the are area displayed.

The lower town of Sighisoara lies in an idyllic countryside setting. Behind the upper town the hill-slope merges into land of great natural value, the so-called Breite (the broad area), ancient cultivated country with innumerable oaks up to 900 years old. It was planned to build a Dracula Theme Park there, but due to resistance from the population and also personal intervention from Prince Charles this plan was recently abandoned.

On our way back down the road below the Church Tower we pass the covered Old Womens Passageway again. Elli gives it a wide berth.

In the lower town is the venerable old Hotel Steaua.

We look back at Sighisoaras wavelike rooftops. Unlike Ceausescus concrete, uniform towns, each building here has centuries of history to tell and witnesses to a staunch Saxon population, which despite enemy raids, floods, fires and plague valiantly defended the town and repeatedly and doggedly rebuilt it when necessary.
