Drei Kirchen, Kesmark / Three churches, Kezmarok

Kezmarok is a town with 17000 inhabitants in the Spis region. When the town received its charter in 1269 it was allowed to organize a cheese market, in German Käsemarkt, from which the name Kezmarok is derived.
Our reason to visit the town is to see an old church that is included in the Unesco World Heritage as one of the five remaining Wooden Churches of the Slovak part of the Carpathian Mountain Area.
When we arrive at Kezmarok, we find not one church, but three, as shown in the picture.

Orthodoxe Kirche, Kesmark / Orthodox Church, Kezmarok

Starting from the left: the Orthodox Church is so new that it is not even shown in the Google Maps satellite picture at the time of writing (Aug. 2012) and we didnt find any further information about it.

Artikularkirche, Kesmark / Articular church, Kesmarok

In the middle is the old Lutheran church, on the left of this picture. It is the church we came to see and is a so-called Articular church.
At a time of attacks by the Turks and of other social disturbances the Catholic Habsburg Emperor Leopold I wanted to win the loyalty of his Protestant subjects. So in the Congress of Sopron in 1681 articles were specified under which they might build churches (hence Articular). The churches had to built of wood, must be outside city walls and had to fulfil further restrictions.
This historical situation is comparable to the one surrounding the building of the Peace Churches in Poland, which we visited at Jawor and Swidnica. That was at the time of Leopolds father and predecessor as Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III after the end of the 30 Years War about 33 years earlier.

Inside the beautiful wooden church is a feast of colour. For example, the ceiling is painted as a blue sky with clouds and biblical figures in it.

The organ in the Articular Church was built by the organ builder Cajkovsky Vavrinec from Levoca. It was completed in 1729 and is known for its perfect sound despite having only wooden pipes.

The original church was finished in 1688. Only a year was permitted for construction. The current church is a Baroque replacement from 1717 and can seat up to 1541 people.

The third church on the square: the new Protestant church next to the old church was started in 1872, (to quote the source literally The formal shovel was made in the year 1872.), and was consecrated in 1894. It was designed by the architect Teofil Hansen in the so-called eclectic style with Byzantine, Romanesque and Moorish elements.

Der Turm der neuen evangelischen Kirche erinnert tatsächlich an maurische Architektur.

The tower of the new Protestant church does have a very Moorish look.

The Thököly Castle, which was built to defend the town,  dates from the mid fifteenth C or earlier. According to the towns web-site the Thökoly family acquired it originally unlawfully in 1579, lived in it for 4 generations and extended it to be a Renaissance residence. After revolt against the Habsburgs the family was dispossessed.
In 1702 the castle came into the possession of the town and is now a museum.

...  as we are pleased to witness. Specifically, the castle, including the chapel (on the right in the right-hand picture), can be used for weddings.

Kesmark mit Tatragebirge im Hintergrund / Kezmarok with Tatra Mountains in the background

The High Tatra forms a splendid backdrop to the old town.
The grey sloping roof of the interestingly shaped old house seems to pick up the mountain slope theme. Incidentally - in case anyone is interested - the red sign says that the house, which is very near the castle, is for sale.
