Was machen die Rumänen an einem schönen Sonntag?
 In Heerscharen belagern sie die Flussauen südlich von Brasov entlang dem schönen Tal Richtung Ciucas-Gebirge, Rauch steigt auf, überall wird gegrillt.
Selbst als wir unser Auto auf der Passhöhe (Pasul Bratocea, 1263m) stehen lassen, um Richtung Ciucasgipfel (1954m) aufzusteigen, nehmen nicht wenige Fahrzeuge den eigentlich unbefahrbaren Weg unter die Räder. Ein noch exquisiterer Grillplatz will gefunden werden.
Dieses Panoramabild zeigt außer einem Blick auf die Ausläufer des Ciucamassivs (li) die Höhensüchtigen unter den grillfreudigen Rumänen.

We are interested to see what Romanians do on a sunny Sunday.
To the south of Brasov they flock to the shores of the river along the beautiful valley leading to the Ciucas Mountains. Barbecue smoke rises everywhere.
Even when we drive right to the top of the pass road (Pasul Bratocea, 1263m), and park to walk on up towards the Ciucas peak (1963m), some vehicles are still keeping going up along the rough road. The hunt goes on for an even better place to barbecue with an even finer view.

 Das hufeisenförmige Ciucas-Massiv bietet etwas für die Karpaten Ungewöhnliches an: zahlreiche bizarre, meist abgerundete Felsformationen, die aussehen wie steinerne Riesen, Türme, geschwätzige Weiber oder eine Sphinx -  und die auch solche Namen tragen.
Wir befinden uns in der Nähe der Sfinxul Bratocei, doch wir können später nicht endgültig klären, welches Felsgebilde wir hier abgelichtet haben.

The horseshoe shaped Ciucas massif has a feature which is unusual in the Carpathians: numerous bizarre, mostly rounded rocky formations looking like stone giants, towers, gossiping hags or the Sphinx, and they are named accordingly.
We are somewhere near the Sfinxul Bratocei, but havent been able to find out subsequently which rocks we actually photographed.   

Wir steigen langsam höher, entdecken einen noch abgelegeneren Grillplatz (Bild Mitte) und sehen so manches steinerne Ungetüm zwischen dem Fichtenbestand hervorlugen.

We climb higher. We see many of what looks like a type of mountain juniper, each with a skirt of branches sheltering its base (l). In the middle is a yet more isolated place for a barbecue and on the right one of the stone monsters peering out at us between the trees. 

In der Nähe eines alten Sendemastes sehen wir links noch einmal die südöstlichen Ausläufer des Ciucas-Massivs, nämlich die Spitze des 1817m hohen Zaganu. Ungefähr in der Bildmitte müsste sich der Ferienort Cheia befinden, allerdings entdecken wir nur riesige Radioteleskope.
Rechts erheben sich über den Hochweideflächen die Ausläufer des Grohorti-Gebirges.

From near an old transmission mast we see on the left the south-easterly foothills of the Ciucas massif with the Zaganu peak (1817m). About in the middle must be the vacation resort of Cheia, but we can only spot huge radio telescopes.

On the right above the high grazing slopes are the foothills of the Grohorti mountains. 

Ein Blick nach Nordwesten (ganz rechts müsste Brasov liegen) lässt uns Böses ahnen. Und tatsächlich holt uns ein kräftiges Gewitter binnen weniger Minuten ein. Wir verbergen uns anfangs zwischen runden Felskolossen, während Blitze ganz in der Nähe einschlagen.
Schließlich machen wir uns doch an den Abstieg. Das Gewitter schreckt auch eine Gruppe Amateurfunker auf, die in der Nähe des alten Telegrafenmastes wohl besonders guten Empfang haben. Gemeinsam steigen wir den Berg hinab, wobei die Männer ihre schwere altertümliche Funkausrüstung schleppen, und suchen amüsiert in mehreren Sprachen nach ein paar Wortfetzen, die wir alle verstehen.
Bald ist der Sturm vorbei und wir erreichen das Auto ohne weiteren Zwischenfall.

The view to the northwest, (Brasov must lie away to the right), gives us warning of something unpleasant. Only a few minutes later a hefty thunderstorm reaches us. We take shelter between some rocks while lightening strikes not very far away.
The storm gets lighter and we decide to hurry on down the mountain. We meet up on the way with a group of amateur radio hams who presumably had looked for good reception near the radio mast on the mountain and now want to bring their equipment down out of the storm. We have a brief but friendly conversation, looking amusedly for a few mutually understandable words in various languages.
Soon the storm passes and we reach the car without any further problems.

Die Straße Richtung Brasov (Kronstadt) führt an der größten Roma-Siedlung vorbei, die wir bisher gesehen haben. 10000 Roma sollen bei Sacele wohnen, ein vermüllter Bach trennt sie vom Rest der Stadt.
Die Roma verbringen anscheinend den Sonntag damit, dass sie zu Hunderten in der Hauptstraße, die am Hügelkamm entlang läuft, flanieren. Eine eingeschworene Gesellschaft?  Der Häuptling (Bulibascha) Vasile Ionescu, ein studierter Philologe, sagte kürzlich in einem Zeitungsinterview zur Situation der Roma in Europa:" Der Hass der anderen schweißt uns zusammen."

The road towards Brasov goes past the largest Roma suburb that we have seen so far. Apparently 10000 Roma live at Sacele, here separated from the rest of the city by a rubbish-filled stream.
The Roma seem to spend their Sunday promenading in hundreds along the crest of the hill by the main road. A united social group? Their leader (Bulibascha) Vasile Ionescu, a qualified philologist, was quoted in a recent newspaper interview about the situation of the Roma in Europe:  The hate of the others welds us together.

Das Gewitter, das uns aus dem Ciucas-Massiv vertrieben hat, räumt das Feld für einen strahlenden Frühlingsabend. Den wollen wir der bedeutenden Stadt Brasov (Kronstadt) widmen. Die sechstgrößte Stadt Rumäniens (283000 Einwohner) zeigt sich mit einem dicken Gürtel von Betonburgen zuerst abweisend, doch je mehr wir uns der Altstadt nähern, desto reizvoller wird sie.
Das Herz der Stadt ist der Platz Piata Stafului, in dessen Zentrum sich das ehemalige Rathaus befindet (heute ein Museum). Eingekeilt zwischen zahlreichen, in Rumänien in dieser Anhäufung noch eher selten anzutreffenden Straßenrestaurants ragt links der Turm der orthodoxen Kirche empor. Das Bauwerk wurde 1896 vollendet und ist eine perfekte Kopie der Griechischen Kirche in Wien.
Der Platz liegt zu Füßen des Kronstädter Hausbergs, Tampa genannt, zu dessen prächtiger Aussichtsplattform eine Kabelbahn emporführt.

The thunderstorm that drove us out of the Ciucas massif has cleared away leaving a sunny springtime  evening. We want to use it for a visit to the important city of Brasov (pop. 283000). The sixth largest city in Romania has the usual rather off-putting belt of concrete buildings, but the nearer we get to the old city centre the more attractive it gets.
Its heart is the Piata Stafului square, in the middle of which stands the former Town Hall, now a museum. The tower of the Orthodox Church rises up above the line of restaurants on the left. It was completed in 1896 and is a copy of the Greek Church in Vienna.
Above and beyond the square is Brasovs own hill, called Tampa, with a cable car (the dark line just to the left of the Town Hall) leading up to a viewing platform.

Was machen die Kronstädter an diesem Sonntag Abend? Sie gehen Autos gucken. Der Platz ist vollgestellt mit Ausstellungsstücken namhafter europäischer und japanischer Autohersteller. Besonders anziehend scheinen Luxusmodelle mit einem Stern.

So how are the people of Brasov spending this sunny Sunday evening? They are looking at cars. The square is filled with the showroom models of well-known European and Japanese manufacturers. The luxury models with a star as symbol seem to be of particular interest.

Die Stadt war schon immer ein treibender Wirtschaftsmotor Rumäniens. Der vom deutschen Ritterorden im frühen 13. Jh. gegründete Ort wurde nach der Vertreibung der expansionswütigen Ritter von den Sachsen übernommen.
Im Knick des Karpatenbogens gelegen, war er wichtige Grenzstadt zum Osmanischen Reich, dem es zahlreiche Angriffe zu verübeln hatte. Die Stadt erholte sich wirtschaftlich jedes Mal schnell. So scheint es auch heutzutage zu sein: Als Universitätsstadt ist Brasov bei ausländischen Investoren beliebt, und der Arbeitsmark ist leergefegt.

The city has always been an economic driving force in Romania. Founded in the early 13th century by the Teutonic Order, whose ambition for power soon led to their expulsion, the town was taken over by the Transylvanian Saxons.
Situated in the bend of the Carpathian mountain it was an important city on the border to the Ottoman Empire, and was the target of frequent attacks. Fortunately, after each attack economic recovery was quick. Today the economy is flourishing: the university town of Brasov is popular for foreign investors and jobs are apparently plentiful.

Diese und Metro sind im westlichen Landesteil bereits gut vertreten, Tesco und Interspar werden nicht lange auf sich warten lassen. Wenn man die überwiegend große Armut der Bevölkerung bedenkt, so kann man, auch wenn man kein Freund von Billigdiscountern ist, nur hoffen, dass z.B. Lidl und Aldi auch Pläne in der Schublade haben.

On the right the tower of  the former Town Hall built in 1420. Advertisements for the large supermarket chain Carrefour (l)  are very evident. Both they and Metro seem well established in the western part of the country and Tesco and Interspar will presumably be so soon. Seeing how poor many of the population are, the lower-cost discounters like Lidl and Aldi will certainly have a good chance as well.

Zur Erheiterung der Kaufinteressenten wurde ein Clown engagiert, der nicht so recht zu wissen scheint, wie er amüsieren kann.
Die Stadt sieht sich laut Meinung ihres Bürgermeisters hauptsächlich dadurch in ihrem Wachstum eingeschränkt, dass die Verkehrswege so miserabel sind. Obwohl Bukarest nur 140 km entfernt ist, benötigt man über 3 Stunden Fahrzeit. Der Bau einer Autobahn ist für die nächsten Jahre geplant, wie übrigens auch eine Bewerbung für die Winterolympiade 2018 im nahen, noch heimeligen Ski- und Erholungsgebiet Poiana.

The clown here was engaged to entertain potential car customers but either doesnt seem to know how to do it, or is himself more interested in the cars.
According to the town mayor, the growth of the town at the moment is limited by the miserable roads. Although Bucharest is only 140 km away, it is a 3 hour drive to get there. A motorway is planned to be built in the next few years, and an application to host the winter Olympics in 2018 in the nearby homely ski resort of Poiana is also apparently planned.   

Die "Schwarze Kirche", erbaut in den Jahren 1389-1477, von vorne. Ihren Namen hat sie von einem Stadtbrand 1689, den österreichische Truppen verursachten. Den Ruß hat inzwischen wohl der Regen abgewaschen.
Von der mehrheitlich deutschen Bevölkerung im 19. Jh. sind noch ungefähr 1400 Sachsen geblieben. Sonntags findet hier für die stark geschrumpfte Gemeinde ein evangelischer Gottesdienst statt.
Berühmt sind die im Original erhaltene Buchholz-Orgel und 119 persische Teppiche, die Kaufleute im 17. und 18. Jh. nach erfolgreichen Handelsreisen der Kirche aus Dankbarkeit schenkten.

The Black Church, built between 1389 and 1477 showing the front. Its name was given from its appearance after a town fire in 1689 caused by Austrian troops. Since then the rain has washed off most of the soot.
In the 19th century, the Germans were in the majority in the town, now about 1400 people of Transylvanian Saxon descent are left. Protesant Sunday services are held here for the much reduced congregation.
In the church, the beech-wood organ, still in original condition, is famous, as are the 119 Persian carpets, presented in the 17th and 18th centuries by thankful traders after successful journeys.

John steht vor dem schönen Eingangsportal der Kirche und liest, dass die Kirche sonntags geschlossen ist (li).
 Daneben ein Standbild des großen Reformators und Humanisten Honterus, der bewirkte, dass sich die katholische Kirche Siebenbürgens innerhalb kürzester Zeit geschlossen dem lutherischen Glauben zuwandte. In der linken Hand hält er das von ihm verfasste bekannte "Reformationsbüchlein", seine rechte weist auf die gegenüberliegende, von ihm gegründete Schule.
Kirchliche Ankündigungen erfolgen auf deutsch, und wie man sehen kann, verbinden auch hier Paare ihre Hochzeit mit der Taufe ihres Kindes (2. Bild von rechts).

Next to that picture is the statue of the great reformer Johannes Honter, who led the rapid transition of the Catholic Church to Lutherism in Transylvania. In his left hand he holds one of his several famous publications and with the right he points towards his school which still bears his name.
The church announcements of a wedding and a baptism are (for us somehow still surprisingly) in German. 

Drei Türme und drei Basteien sind von der ursprünglichen Wehranlage noch erhalten geblieben. Hier sehen wir den "weißen Turm".

Vom Tisch eines Restaurants an der sonnigen Südseite des Platzes beobachten wir die entspannten, fröhlichen Bewohner Brasovs, 7 Monate vor dem EU-Beitritt, bei ihrer Einstimmung auf die materiellen Verlockungen der Europäischen Union.

From a restaurant table on the sunny south side of the square we enjoy watching the relaxed inhabitants of Brasov. They are seven months before the entry into the EU, and have the prospect that the cars and other material goods will, at least for some, soon become more readily affordable.
