Bratislava
(Pressburg)

Unweit der österreichischen Grenze kommen wir am Anfang unseres Trips durch die Slowakei in Bratislava an. Wir finden bald einen Campingplatz, der, was wir später auch in der Stadt erleben, fest in den Händen der Eishockeyfans liegt. Der Grund: Zur Zeit läuft hier die Eishockey-Weltmeisterschaft. 

Wir nehmen die Chance, mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln in die City zu fahren, um unserer Besichtigungspflicht nachzukommen. Unsere Bilder vermitteln nur einen kleinen Eindruck dieser historischen Stadt. Für mehr Informationen siehe z.B. Wikipedia.

Soon after crossing the border from Austria we arrive in Bratislava at the start of our trip to Slovakia and find a camping site there. The site, and also the city, is mainly in the hands of ice hockey fans, as the World Championship is currently in process here.

We take the opportunity to travel by bus into the city for an afternoons sightseeing. These pictures give only a few impressions of this historic city. For more about the city, see e.g. Wikipedia.

Wir fangen in der Altstadt von Bratislava an. Hier sehen wir den Hauptplatz mit dem Rolandbrunnen (oder Maximilianbrunnen) und das Alte Rathaus. Der Turm des Rathauses geht auf 1370 zurück. Damit ist er eines der ältesten Steingebäude der Stadt. Die restlichen Bestandteile des Rathauses kamen im 15. Jh. dazu.

We start in the old town of Bratislava. Here is the Main Square with the Roland or  Maximilian Fountain and  Old Town Hall. The tower of the town hall dates back to about 1370, making it one of the oldest stone buildings in the city. The rest of the town hall was added in the 15th C.

Der vergleichsweise ruhige Franziskanerplatz wurde nach der Franziskanerkirche und dem Kloster aus dem 13. Jh. benannt.

The relatively quiet Franciscan Square is named after the 13th C Franciscan Church and monastery.

Nur etwa ein Häuserblock entfernt steht das beeindruckende Gebäude des Ursulinenklosters und der gleichnamigen Kirche. Die Ursuliner gehören einem katholischen Orden an, der 1672 nach Bratislava kam, und der sich besonders für Ausbildung engagiert.

Only about a block away is the impressive cloister and church of the Ursulines, a Catholic order that came to Bratislava in 1672 and is involved especially in education.

Auf einem der öffentlichen Plätze amüsiert es uns zu beobachten, wie sich Napoleon vor der bratislavischen Polizei versteckt.

In one of the public squares we are amused to see that Napoleon seems to be hiding from the Bratislava police.

 In einem kleinen Park neben dem SNP Platz steht ein Denkmal,  das an den Slowakischen Nationalaufstand (auf Slowakisch S.N.P.) erinnert. Der Aufstand hatte als Ziel, die slowakische Regime zu stürzen, die mit Nazideutschland kollaborierte.

In a small park next to SNP Square is a memorial to the Slovak National Uprising (in Slovakian S.N.P.) which tried in 1944 to overthrow the Slovak regime that was collaborating with Nazi Germany.

Das Tor zur Synagoge, die von Artur Szalatnai-Slatinsky entworfen  und in den 1920er Jahre gebaut wurde. Sie ist die einzige übrig gebliebene Synagoge in Bratislava und wird von der jüdischen Gemeinschaft aktiv benutzt.  

The gate to the synagogue, which was designed by Artur Szalatnai-Slatinsky and built in the 1920s. It is the only remaining synagogue in Bratislava and is used actively by the Jewish community. 

Das alte Slowakische Nationaltheater (li), 1866 fertiggestellt, steht am Hviezdoslavplatz. Es wurde als Hauptgebäude fürs Nationaltheater durch eine neue Konstruktion in der Nähe der Donau ersetzt.

Eishockey Fans (re) machen kein Geheimnis aus ihren Loyalitäten.

The old Slovakian National Theatre (l), completed in 1886 stands in Hviezdoslav Square. It has been replaced as the main national theatre building by a new construction near the River Danube.

Ice hockey fans (r) make no secret of their preferences.

Manche der Gaststätten haben sich extra fürs Eishockeypublikum herausgeputzt.

The restaurants are especially decorated to welcome the ice hockey public.

Das Michaelstor (li) mit seiner Barbakane (re) ist das einzige noch vorhandene Stadttor der mittelalterlichen Befestigungsanlage. Das ursprüngliche Gebäude wird auf ca. 1300 datiert.

Michael's Gate (l) with its Barbican (r) is the only city gate of the mediaeval fortifications to have survived. The original building dates back to about 1300. 

Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein steigen wir zur Bratislava- Burg hinauf.

In beautiful sunshine we make our way up to Bratislava Castle.

Um einen Überblick über Burg und Umgebung zu bekommen, kann das Bild vergrößert werden.

Die Bratislava-Burg (siehe auch Wikipedia) steht in beherrschender Lage hoch über der Donau und mit Blick auf die ganze Stadt. Es ist bekannt, dass Menschen dieses Gebiet seit über 5000 Jahre nutzen.

Bratislava Castle (see also Wikipedia) is in a dominating position above the River Danube and overlooking the city. The superb site is known to have been in use for over 5000 years.

Vor der Burg steht ein Reiterstandbild von Sventopluk, der im 9. Jh. n. Chr. das Reich von Großmähren regierte und auch  erfolgreich erweiterte.

In front of the castle stands a mounted statue of Svatopluk I, who ruled and extended Great Moravia in the 9th C AD.

Neben den Mauern der Burg sind die Grundmauern der Großmährischen Basilika aus dem 9. Jh. und der Kirche des Heiligen Messias aus dem 11. Jh. teilweise sichtbar.

Next to the castle wall are the remains of the 9th C Great Moravian Basilica and of the 11th C Church of the Holy Saviour.

Der Platz vor der Burg bietet eine ausgezeichnete Aussicht in Richtung Süden über die Donau zum Stadtbezirk Petrzalka. Auf der anderen Seite der Neuen Brücke (Mitte) steht das UFO Restaurant. Siehe auch unten.

From the square in front of the castle there is a fine view out to the south across the River Danube to the suburb Petrzalka. On the other side of the New Bridge in the middle stands the UFO restaurant. See also below.

Manche der Schiffe am Donauufer scheinen Touristenrestaurants zu sein.

Some of the ships on the bank of the Danube are apparently operated as tourist restaurants.

Das Restaurant in der Höhe trägt den passenden Namen UFO-Restaurant. Rechts ist die Neue Brücke  (Novy Most). Wir stehen hier am Donauufer auf der Altstadtseite.

The understanably so-called UFO Restaurant and the New Bridge (Novy Most) taken from the river bank on the old city side.

Vom anderen Flussufer unter der Neuen Brücke schauen wir auf die Burg und die Donau.

Die Donau ist als internationaler Wasserweg sehr wichtig. Sie verbindet vier nationale Hauptstädte, mehr als jeder andere Fluss der Welt, und zehn Länder. Dieser Frachtkahn fährt flussaufwärts in Richtung Wien, der Hauptstadt von Österreich, und Deutschland. Flussabwärts liegt Ungarn mit der Hauptstadt Budapest, danach folgen Kroatien und Serbien mit der Hauptstadt Belgrad, schließlich noch Bulgarien, Moldawien, die Ukraine und am Ende Rumänien. Der Fluss entleert sich durch das Donaudelta (siehe Bericht unseres Besuchs dort) ins Schwarze Meer. 

From the other bank under the New Bridge we see the castle and traffic on the River Danube.

The Danube is an important international waterway that connects four capital cities, (the most of any river in the world), and ten countries. This barge is travelling upstream towards Vienna, capital of Austria, and Germany. Downstream are Hungary, with its capital Budapest, followed by Croatia, Serbia with its capital Belgrade, then Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and finally Romania. The river then flows through the Danube Delta (see report of our visit) into the Black Sea. 

Wir nehmen den Aufzug zum schicken UFO-Restaurant, um dann weiter oben zur Aussichtsplattform zu gelangen.
Die Aufzugfahrt ist nicht gerade billig (ca. €6,50 pro Kopf), aber jetzt genießen wir den exzellenten, panoramischen Ausblick zurück in Richtung Norden über die Donau zur Altstadt (re) und Burg (li).

We take the lift up to the smart UFO restaurant so that we can go up to the sightseeing deck above it.
The lift is not cheap, (its costs about €6,50 each), but now we enjoy the excellent panoramic view back to the north over the River Danube towards the old city (on the right) and the castle (on the left).

Hier blicken wir  vom UFO-Restaurant aus in Richtung Osten,  d.h. flussabwärts die Donau entlang. Rechts sieht man den Nordrand des Petrzalka Bezirks.

In this view we look to the east, i.e downstream,  along the River Danube from the UFO Restaurant, with the northern part of the Petrzalka suburb on the right.

Wir bleiben nicht lange in Bratislava, weil wir weiterkommen wollen, um mehr von der Slowakei zu sehen, doch die Stadt ist wirklich einen Besuch wert.

We do not stay long in Bratislava as we want to get on and see more of Slovakia, but it is well worth visiting.
