Levoca is a small town with about 15 000 inhabitants with a particularly well-preserved town centre. In 2009 the town was added to the list of Unesco World Culturage Heritage sites, together with Spis Castle and other sites in the area.

Todays town was founded by Germans colonists, who were invited to settle here after destruction of the previous settlement during the Mongol invasion of 1241/2.

The picture shows some of the attractive town houses around the main square, which is named after the famous carver and sculptor Master Paul of Levoca.

A fanciful but handsome town palace of the wealthy Thurzo family of business entrepreneurs, who were active mainly from the 15th to the 17th centuries, is also situated on the main square.

The main square is dominated by two distinctive buildings, the 14th C. Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. James (right) and the Old Town Hall (left).

The fine Altar of the Nativity also stands in St. James' Cathedral, but is of a later date than Master Pauls work.

The decorative Old Town Hall (15th to 17th C.) now houses a museum. Painted on the south-west wall facing us are five pictures of Virtues with accompanying Latin texts.

I have tried to get the idea of each with some help from the Google translator - more skilful translations welcome!

Virtues:

Temperance is the virtue that governs desires.

Prudence is a virtue that carefully reflects what is fitting to each action.

Courage is confidence and generosity, or patience and steadfastness.

Patience is strength while enduring hardships and pains.

Justice is the virtue to assign to each his own dues.

Near the Old Town Hall stands the Cage of Shame dating from the 17th C. that was used for public and shameful punishment.

At least it has a lightning conductor to prevent a severer penalty.

On the way back after visiting Levoca we pass the little historic town of Spisska Sobota and decide to look at it.

The first written mention of the town was in 1256 under the name (paraphrased) of 'Market on Saturday.'

The picture shows part of  Saturday Square. The white building towards the right is the bell tower and on the far right is the Town House, that was used earlier by the town administration.

Bordering a further square are handsome old commercial buildings; the white building near the far end is an Exhibition Hall, The House of Cultural and Educational Center (sic).

Looking back across the same square in Spisska Sobota are the belltower (centre), built originally in 1588-89 and replaced by a Baroque style building in 1780. To its right stand the Roman Catholic parish Church of Saint George, a late Romanesque church from the 13th C. and to its left the white Town House. On the far left is the library.

After leaving the pretty little town of Spisska Sobota we return to Tatranska Lomnica.
