Olympia von oben / Olympia from above

Seen from above - in our case as we walk down from the camping site on the hill - the archeological site of Olympia looks peaceful. Of the ruins only the white pillar of the Zeus temple can be seen among the trees.

Büsse und Taxis / Buses and taxis

Near the entrance of the site it looks different. There are numerous tourist buses and taxis.

Philippeion

And inside the site, here by the graceful ruins of the Philippeon, which was dedicated to the family of Phillip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, you can only take a reasonable photo if you photograph upwards.

Unten strömen so viele Touristen vorbei, dass man schwerlich freien (Kamera-)Schuss bekommt. (Zugegeben, wir sind auch Touristen.)

At ground level so many tourists flow past that you dont get a chance for a shot. (To be fair, we are also tourists ourselves.)

Palaestra und/and Theokoleon

Later the flow of tourists ebbs enough for us to start to enjoy the visit.

Behind the wall are the Palaestra (r), the wrestling school, and the Theokoleon (left of centre), the priests quarters.

Olympisches Stadion / Olympic stadium

The original Olympic Stadium (r) and the arch leading to it (l).
On the pedestals on the left on the way into the stadium stood the so-called Zanes as a warning for competitors in the games. They were statues of Zeus that were erected in cases of cheating at the games. They showed details of the cases including the names of the athletes involved.

Here at the remains of the altar to the goddess Hera the fire is kindled for distribution before modern Olympic Games.

Zeustempel / Temple of Zeus

Only one pillar is standing above the ruins of the Temple of Zeus. The 64m long temple was the central cultic location of the Olympic Games. It was destroyed by earthquakes in 522 and 551 AD.

The last two pictures in this chapter show the statues which decorated the west and east pediments of the temple.

Statuen am Westgiebel des Zeustempels / Statues decorating the west pediment of the temple of Zeus

These statues decorated the west pediment of the temple of Zeus. They represent the mythological struggle between the good Lapiths and the bad Centaurs.

Zuschauer vor dem Ostgiebel / Visitors in front of the east pediment

These visitors admire the east pediment of the temple of Zeus. The statues show the mythological chariot race between Oinomaos and Pelops, in which with Zeuss help (middle figure) Pelops wins the hand of King Oinomaos daughter.
