Zaragoza, Aragon

und durch

and through

Castilla y Leon

Zaragoza, capital of Aragon, is on our way south. The name derives from the Roman settlement  Caesar Augustus. The heart of the city is the long  Plaza del Pilar near which impressive old and newer buildings are grouped. At one end is a large fountain in the shape of the South American continent in memory of the Hispanidad, the discovery of the Americas.

The plaza is dominated by the Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar, a cathedral in classical style, which is a world centre of the adoration of the Virgin Mary.

The cathedral has eleven colourfully tiled cupolas and is the distinctive symbol of the city.

(Middle) The Mary Chapel, which stands up in the middle of the cathedral as a church within a church, is  what draws thousands of visitors from all over the world. (Right) In a niche the small figure of Mary stands on a pillar (Pilar). The robes are changed daily. According to Catholic teaching Mary appeared here in 40 AD standing on a pillar and told St. James to build a church on that spot.

The cathedral seen from the bridge over the Rio Ebro.

Verspielten oder kraftstrotzenden Skulpturen begegnet man an vielen Stellen.

Some of the playful and vigourous statues  seen in  the city.

We continue on southwards on good motorways. The landscape changes more to the endless olive plantations  we expected to the see in Spain.

We hope the bull in the advertisement doesnt feel insulted by the rather tame cow on the warning sign!

(Confession: - I pasted the road sign into this  picture!)

In the middle of the reddish rocks of the Jalon valley is the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Huerta founded in 1179. We caught sight of it next to the motorway and decided to turn off and have a look.

The well-preserved and extensive buildings have a  lovely warm stone colour.

A model of the monastery near the church door gives a good overview.

Unser fahrbares Häuschen in historischer Kulisse

Car and caravan wait for us patiently outside the monastery.
