Holašovice / Holasovice

Ein bäuerlich-  barockes Dorf

A rural baroque village

Was bietet sich also an?

Introduction:

We have arranged to have two weeks free in late autumn for a trip with our caravan. Not enough for a very long journey, so where shall we go? Looking at the map of Europe we realize that neither of us has ever been in the Czech Republic, although it borders directly on Germany.
Following the same procedure as for our round trip around the Iberian peninsular in the spring, we look up the World Cultural Heritage sites and are surprised to find that there are 12 UNESCO sites nicely distributed around this relatively small country.
So after the positive experience in Spain and Portugal, where looking for UNESCO sites (among other things) led us to all sorts of interesting and beautiful places, we decide to set off on a UNESCO-Trail, as far as the few camping sites still open in October and November will allow.

So in the last week of October we set off eastwards in wonderful autumn weather. After cross the border beyond Passau in northern Bavaria we come into a charming Czech countryside with lots of lakes and ponds and rounded, wooded hills. The colourful countryside in the picture above is just near the small and not particularly well-signposted southern Bohemian village of Holasovice - the first of our World Culture sites in the Czech Republic.

As this World Culture site is a small village, we decide to visit it on our journey to the camping site in Budweis.
We make a full circuit of the village until we find a place in a side street where we can both park with the caravan and also be able to drive away again reasonably easily, (i.e. somewhere other than the visitors car-park!). At the same time we get an overview of the village - not complicated. The village still has its layout dating from the Middle Ages.  There is a very large oval village-green with 22 pairs of farm buildings strung around it like a single chain of pearls. The panorama picture above shows the north-western side of the village.

The house facades are distinctively unusual  in form and are pleasantly colourful. This style is known as South Bohemian Rural Baroque. Each building complex has a pair of similarly styled house-fronts joined together by a large gateway.

Many of the farms have a well and a hand-pump in front. Water is not scarce in the area, which is said to be very fertile. That would explain the relative wealth that must have been present when this fine collection of buildings was erected.
The friendly elderly couple that we approach here greet us heartily in broken German. They tell us about the hard work that they have had to put into their property and that they have now handed on the farm to their sons. Then they let us glance through the gate into the yard beyond. We see that only the front facade is in the beautiful rural baroque style.

Through the gate is this long farmyard with newly renovated buildings grouped around it. On the right we are in the shade of the dwelling-house with stables and sheds beyond it. The building on the left used to be the granary and there are further stables and sheds adjacent to it. Closing the yard at the far end is a large barn with a gate giving access to the farm fields beyond. All of Holasovices farms are built with a similar basic plan, but not all are in anything like this good condition.

Here are some examples of Rural Barock in Holasovice. They are typical of the style that can be found throughout South Bohemia, but nowhere else so concentrated and so  complete. The gentle curves are supposed to reflect the typical landscape forms and the  different plant, animal and abstract decorations demonstrate  aesthetic sense, as well as the pride and wealth of the builders.

This tiny chapel stands in one corner of the village green. It was erected in 1755 and is dedicated to St. Nepomuk.

This statue in a small alcove above the door presumably shows St. Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia and especially of confessional secrecy.
At the time of the cruel king Wenzel in 1393 Johann von Nepomuk was the queens father confessor. According to the legend that led to his canonization, the king had him tortured to reveal the queens confessional secrets, but he refused. He was then drowned in the River Vltava.

When his grave was opened in 1719 it was claimed that his tongue had not decomposed. The historicity of this is disputable, but it shows the high importance attached in the Catholic Church to maintaining the secrecy of the confessional.

A workman is laying cable along the road. We ask him if the village has benefited from its nomination as World Cultural Heritage. He said the economic situation is still very difficult in the village. On the one hand, lots of tourists come - as we were leaving a busload of Japanese tourists arrived and the previously empty village was suddenly full - but they leave no money there, so the new status has not increased the income of the village much yet.
There was no charge for parking and the little restaurant was closed.

The village today has 140 inhabitants. The first historical mention of the village was in 1263. Almost all the farms were rebuilt between the 17th and 19th centuries on older foundations. The village was donated to the Cistercian order in South Bohemian Hohenfurth in the 13th C. and was owned by them until 1848. Between 1520 and 1525 the Plague almost wiped out the village and only 2 occupants survived. The monastery then invited settlers to come from Bavaria and Austria, with the result that the village became a German-speaking enclave in a predominantly Czech area.

The village pond in the middle of the village green is not as large as this picture suggests.
At the end of the Second World War the inhabitants had to flee and the village fell into decay, which continued under Communist rule. With the fall of the Iron Curtain the village received a new chance and its uniqueness was recognized. The buildings were carefully restored and newly inhabited, and in 1998 Holasovice was added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

The owners of house No. 36 have even built a post-box  in proper style.

Just behind the village is another larger and very natural-looking pond.

The farmyard duck is not alarmed by our photography efforts.

We leave Holasovice with mixed feelings. It would be good if the inhabitants could profit from their World Cultural status, as happens elsewhere, but on the other hand it would be sad if the intactness and rural solitude were lost on the way.

Source of some of the information about Holasovice is Wikipedia (article in German).
