Olomouc

Eine Säule und mehr

A Column and more

A single column in the UNESCO world heritage list? We are rather dubious whether it is worth making a 140 km trip from our camping site for it. We have seen lots of Baroque pillars - almost one in every Czech market square, it seems, so whats special about this one?
To answer this question we decide on the journey. Besides, we use the search for heritage list sites as a way of exploring the country. Often there are  other interesting things on the way.

The column stands in Olomouc, (pop. 104000), the 4th largest city in the Czech Republic. It is the ancient seat of a bishop, later archbishop, and has the 2nd oldest university in the country. It boasts the largest collection of cultural treasures outside Prague and large areas of the old town centre are under monumental protection.

After traversing the broad industrial belt around the town we find a place to park and are soon in front of one of the monumental Baroque churches - here the portal of the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow.

A few steps further on we see this small chapel. It was built in 1912 on the site of the prison in which the Catholic priest Johann Sarkander was tortured to death by the Protestant nobles by being broken on the wheel. They were trying to get him to reveal confessional secrets. The wheel used is apparently viewable in the basement.

Almost opposite is the huge St. Michaels Church whose three cupolas stand out on the towns skyline. The interior is rich in gold and red marble.
This panorama picture of the roof shows the apse on the right, the Baroque organ on the left and the three cupolas in between.
For the technically interested, this is a panorama made up of 4 hand-held pictures. I almost fell over backwards and had to be propped up by Elli to take the last one in the sequence - the organ upside-down over my head!
Tip: Click picture to enlarge. Turn screen 90°. (Works best with a laptop!)

A visitor has placed a red rose in the hand of the dead Christ in this expressive sculpture.

The fine cloister next to the church.
The bishopric of Olomouc was founded in 1063. As in Salzburg, with which Olomouc is often compared, the bishops were enormously powerful and ruled like princes.

Now we are getting closer to the famous pillar. The 3-D plan of the old town centre is in the enormous central square Horni namesti (Upper Square), which is also where the pillar stands. In the right-hand picture the square is shown from above: in the middle the Town Hall with fountains on both sides of it and in the upper left corner the "Sloup Nejsvetejsi trojice", the Holy Trinity Column.

Unser erster Anblick vom Platz.

Our first view of the square. The enormous central Town Hall, nowadays a museum, with its 70m high bell-tower, prevents us from having a complete view of the Upper Square.
In the 14th century the ruling count allowed the inhabitants of the town, first mentioned in 1017, to build a Town Hall. At that time Olomouc was the most important town of  Moravia. Later the town hall was badly damaged and was rebuilt in 1955.

On the north side of the Town Hall is an astronomical clock with a complicated mechanism. It dates from 1422 but was subjected to socialist reconstruction in 1955. At midday each day the clock plays a Moravian country melody, to which the Working Class turns in a circle and, to crown it all, the golden cock in the middle of the clock beats its wings and crows rather hoarsely . This performance has achieved quite a following.

The town hosts 6 Baroque fountains, of which these two are in the Market Square.
The Caesar Fountain (left) celebrates the story that the town was founded at the time of Julius Caesars empire as a Roman fort named Mons Juli, which apparently modified to Olomouc.
On the right is the Hercules figure on his fountain.

The tortoise is part of a water playground. The Arion fountain, built a few years ago, refers to a Greek myth according to which Arion was attacked at sea, jumped  overboard and was then saved by a dolphin. The dolphin is shown in several variations.
This myth is meant to illustrate the revival of Olomouc after the 30-years war. In 1642 the town was occupied for 8 years by Swedish troops, during which the population was decimated - it fell from 30000 to 2000 - and the town was left in ruins. Brno became the new capital of Moravia and Olomouc took over a century to  flourished again.

The outstanding Baroque Holy Trinity Column was hidden behind the Town Hall earlier, but  cant be overlooked when you stand in front of it.  At 35m it is the highest Baroque pillar in the world, with room for a small chapel in its base. It is decorated by 18 copper statues and at the top the figures of the Holy Trinity are crowned by a dove which is surrounded by shining golden sun-rays.

The column witnesses to the increased religious feeling and new economic strength in the town in the 18th  century. Empress Maria Theresa was present at its dedication in 1754. In 2000 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The column with the entrance to the chapel. The steps leading up to it are a popular place to meet and the town authorities have set up benches around the column.

A young woman has made herself comfortable with her music on one of the benches, as far as that is possible in the cold weather.
Perhaps she is one of the 13500 students being educated in the town. Incidentally Gregor Mendel, who developed his laws of inheritance from studies of pea plants and is now called the father of genetics, was a poor student here at the Philosophical Institute.

Again the square with column, Town Hall and noble houses.
In the 19th century the town population was 80% German. This sank to 30% before the 2nd World War and after the war the last of the Germans were expelled from the city.

The charming Skolni, School Street, leads from the Upper Square - looking backwards the Town Hall tower is visible -  up to the next square

In the next square, the Zerotinovo namesti, is the St. Michaels Church  with its decorative cupolas, which we looked at the interior of before (above).

Elli started photographing the very decorative facades in the city. Here a selection of them.

We look back down the School Street from the Zerotinovo Square again. To the left the square leads almost directly into the next one ...

Symphonie in F-Dur.

... which is the Lower Square, here in a panorama view.
The city is richly endowed with squares. This one again has two fountains and a Column of the Virgin Mary.
If you expand this picture you can just recognize the hole in the lower part of the column. According to an old tradition still followed today, to be successful in his/her exams a student must previously have crawled through the hole.
Incidentally, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in one of these houses in 1767, one with a richly decorated bay window - maybe the white-painted one about a third  along from the left? With mother and father he had fled from a Plague epidemic in Vienna. The 11-year-old composed his 6th Symphony in F Major in Olomouc.

Taking a look at our 3-D town plan again, here we see the famous Wenzel Cathedral. It stands at the edge of the old town above the Morava River on the site of the Premysliden Castle, which was erected there in the 11th century. Remains of the castle can still be seen.

Der gotische Dom wurde im 14. Jh, errichtet.

The Gothic Cathedral was built in the 14th century. The last major change was the addition of two neo-Gothic towers in 1890.
At 100m it has the highest church tower in Moravia.
The interior surprises us with its mild colours inside and with  the flower and star decorations on pillars and arches.

Soft pastel shades and delicate patterns are in pleasant contrast to the more usual opulent Baroque.
In the cathedral there are bishops graves and the grave of King Wenzel III of Bohemia, who was murdered in Olomouc in 1306.

And here we meet again the courageous Priest Johann Sarkander - or  at least his mortal remains -  who brutally paid with his life for his defence of the secrets of confession. Sarkander was canonized in 1995 by Pope John Paul II.

With a last look at the beautiful cathedral in evening light we say farewell to this city, where we came to look at a column and saw much more.
