Křtiny / Krtiny

Eine barocke Pilgerstätte

A Baroque place of pilgrimage

On the way from Brno through the picturesque Karst countryside, while we were looking for the campsite at Jednovice, we drive through the tiny town of Krtiny directly past this large church. Our rather meagre Marco Polo guide has nothing to say on the subject, so at first we dont pay much attention to this gleaming building, as we are busy enough trying to visit the numerous UNESCO Heritage sites in this part of the Czech Republic.
But on the day of our departure towards Prague, as we pass the church yet again and probably for the last time, do we decide spontaneously to interrupt our journey and to have a look at this externally impressive looking church.
Unfortunately, in the time between the first and second pictures, not only has the weather deteriorated, but also our camera. After a defect with our Minolta (see Brno), we have replaced it with a pocket-sized Panasonic Lumix.
Nevertheless, in we go to look and to take pictures, and are very impressed by what we find.

We go in through the entrance and find ourselves in a relatively small, enclosed monastery courtyard. In the centre is a statue of the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus. Behind it are the only window openings in the courtyard wall. They look down towards Krtiny in the valley.

In front of the window openings, which are protected by delicately wrought ironwork, 15 church bells are hung up. From here they would be well placed to ring out down the valley, but how they are hung up makes us doubtful as to whether they could really be made to swing properly. We assume that they have been hung here temporarily until restoration work on the 73m high church tower has been completed.

The bells are almost new -  this one is stamped with the year 2004 - but we were not able to find out more details.
Maybe after decades of socialist-decreed silence the valley will soon be filled with  their carillon sound.

What we do not know at this point is that these self-contained, rounded church buildings bear the signature of the famous Baroque architect Giovanni Santini-Aichel,  (see Zelena Hora), and were built to his plans. Some experts regard Krtiny as the most beautiful Baroque church in the Czech Republic.
Although there are no other visitors today, numerous paintings of the Virgin Mary in various styles, some very old, witness to the many pilgrims who have visited here.
Krtiny was a much-visited place of pilgrimage over many centuries - one of the oldest in the Czech Republic. The first documented mention of Krtiny is in a Papal document of 1237. With the support of the Moravian bishops it became very popular as a place of pilgrimage. It suffered heavily during the Hussite Wars and the 30-Years War, but survived.

Although we are not particular fans of Baroque art and architecture, we are very impressed by the form and colours in the interior of the church.
Light streams in through 30 windows onto the pastel painted convexities and protuberances, everything is ripe and cheerful. Ones gaze slowly swings forward to concentrates on the the Lady Altar framed by 6 white columns. This central Mother of God figure with the child Jesus is the heart of the church. The Gothic sculpture dates from the 14th century and was later embellished with Baroque accessories.

These are two vertical panorama pictures, each made up of three pictures. They show the Lady Altar at the front and the organ at the back of the church nave, each under a smaller cupola. These cupolas merge into the main 35m high cupola which puts its stamp on the external silhouette of the church.
Krtiny was at its zenith in the 17th century with between 30 000 and 40 000 pilgrims each year. Up to a hundred assistant priests helped the monks of the Premonstratensian order who then lived here.
The two churches, the Czech and the German ones, became too small for this mass of people, so between 1728 and 1750 this magnificent sanctuary was built to Santinis plan in the form of a Greek Cross. It was Santinis largest church built in this shape.

Here we have joined the two panorama pictures together at the top to get a complete ceiling view of the mighty cupola and of the altar (left) and organ (right).
Elli thinks I must work a bit on the flexibility of my back to get the floor under the organ into the picture as well next time! (I took the sequence of 6 pictures - without a tripod - starting at the altar and then continuing up and over my head backwards.)
(As usual, where indicated, a mouse-click on the picture will expand it.)

In every direction there are opulent details, such as the magnificent blue drapes (made of plaster) hanging from a balcony in the middle picture.
Famous artists of the time such as the sculptor Andreas Schweigel and the painter  Josef Winterhalder decorated the church.

Behind the Lady Altar are several remarkable teaching-paintings by the Jesuit priest Ignaz Raab illustrating Passion scenes of Jesus Christ and other biblical themes.

This section shows the richness of these colourful illustrations of the life of Jesus. The diamond-shaped spaces between the scenes are filled with closely written text,  presumably as presentation hints for the monk teaching from the pictures.

The central figure of this place of pilgrimage is omnipresent. The specific facial characteristics and  expressions of Mary and child in the original Statue of Grace (right) have often been recognizably copied.

The church complex on the left (on the left, Chapel of St. Anna, patron saint of family, colonnade and church) was extended later by a college building.
Communication with the friendly workman is unfortunately not very successful because of language limitations, so we dont get much more information about this building. A secret glance inside reveals its ruinous condition, which is obviously the subject of massive restoration effort.

A more modern column. It supports the roof of a colourful motorway restaurant on the way from Brno to Prague.
At last we have managed to tear ourselves away from Krtiny and enjoy a very tasty meal here. Our plan to cater for ourselves has been utterly foiled by the inexpensive and good quality food on offer.
In the evening we reach the camping site on an island in the River Vltava in Prague.
