3. Book of Kells

Among other interesting things to see in Trinity College Dublin is this great treasure. It is The Book of Kells, an astonishingly precisely and ornately illustrated manuscript dating from about the end of the 8th century, probably the most beautiful of its kind.
The original can be viewed only under dim light to protect the ancient colours and it is kept behind bullet-proof glass. Each day it is turned to another of the 340 pages.

Here is a detail showing how precise and imaginative the decorations are.

The book is supposed to have been made by Celtic monks on the Island of Iona and later brought to Kells to protect it from Viking robbers.

Mathematical borders and patterns are enlivened by tiny human and animal motives. In the copies you can see much more than is visible of the original under its dimmed light, but it is nevertheless wonderful to have seen it.
