6. Ring of Kerry

Wir haben es geschafft, das Land zu durchqueren, und sind in Killarney in unserer bequemen "Bed & Breakfast" Unterkunft, eigentlich eine gut geführte Pension, eingezogen.

We have now crossed the island and reach our very comfortable Bed & Breakfast in Killarney.  

Irland ist bekannt für seine "Ring-Strassen", deren berühmteste, den "Ring of Kerry", wir am nächsten Tag abfahren wollen.

Ireland is famous for its touring rings and on the next day we want to drive around the best-known one, the Ring of Kerry.

Wir umfahren den Ring nach dem Rat der Einheimischen gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, beginnend bei Killorglin im Norden. Das Beste soll dann am Schluss kommen.
Die Morgennebel heben sich nur langsam vom Boden und geben zögerlich blassblaue Umrisse naher Küsten frei.

On local advice we drive around the ring anti-clockwise, starting at Killorglin in the north, so that we have the best part at the end.
The morning mists rise rather slowly and reveal  grudgingly the pale blue outline of the nearby coast. 

Ein hier gern gezüchtetes Blackface-Schaf aus den schottischen Bergen, beliebt wegen seines zarten Fleisches.

Black-faced sheep from the Scottish mountains with impressive horns are bred here -  especially for their tender meat.

Auch im Oktober sind die Wiesen noch von frischem Grün, wenn sie regelmäßig beweidet werden.

Even in October the regularly grazed meadows are fresh and very green.

Eine Kerry-Kuh in der warmen Mittagssonne. Am Abend wird sie die Milch für unsere "kerrygold" Butter spenden, so hoffen wir.

2001 - das Jahr der Maul - und Klauenseuche. Auch das Jahr der von zwangsweise weggeschmissenen Käsebroten überquellenden Mülleimer an Fährhäfen und Flugterminals. Kein Molekül eines Milchprodukts durfte in ein anderes Land transportiert werden.

Für den reisenden Autofahrer ein Jahr des sauberen Unterbodens - dank ständiger Wagenduschen mit Desinfektionsmittel.

2001 - the year of Foot and Mouth disease. Also the year of being obliged to throw cheese sandwiches away. Even unopened cheese in foil just purchased at the Welsh supermarket  had to be put into the overfilled dustbins at the ferry terminal. We had forgotten that no molecule of a milk product is allowed into Ireland.

Also the underside of the car is cleaner than ever this year due to the disinfectant sprays.

A simple but well-kept Irish cottage snuggles down sheltering from the frequent winds.

Überall auf der Insel finden sich aber auch verfallene Gemäuer. Um 1840 betrug die Bevölkerungszahl über 8 Mill. Die ab 1845 grassierende Kartoffelfäule, die hauptsächlich die arme Bevölkerung traf, führte zu über einer Million Hungertoten. Weitere Millionen Iren wanderten anschließend aus. Die Bevölkerung sank auf unter 3 Millionen.

Ruins of deserted houses are frequent on the island. Around 1840 the population was over 8 million. In 1845 the Potato Famine began. Worst hit were the poor whose staple diet was potatoes. It led to the starvation of over a million people. Further millions emigrated and the population sank to under 3 million.

Johns Urgroßvater mit dem gleichen Namen (John Capper) trat im 3. Jahr der Hungersnot 1847 der Armee bei und wurde bald nach Indien versetzt.

My great-grandfather John Capper was one of those who got away. He joined the army in 1847, the third year of the famine and was soon transferred to England and later to India.

 Heute stehen an den Straßen häufig Schilder mit der Aufschrift: "Famine house - visit 1 Pound" ("Hungersnothaus - Besuch ein Pfund").
Die Einwohnerzahl Irlands, (zusammen mit Nord-Ireland) liegt heute bei 5,5 Millionen. 46% sind unter 25 Jahre alt. Viele Jahrzehnte der Depression scheinen überwunden. Heute wirkt Irland lebendiger und hoffnungsvoller als manches andere europäische Land.

Today you see signs near the road offering 1 Pound visits to Famine Houses.
The population of Ireland and Northern Ireland together is nowadays about 5.5 million. 46% are under 25 years old. The many years of depression seem to be past. Today Ireland makes a much livelier and more positive impression than many other European countries.
